diagnosed as 'something viral' but not warts: please advise

by pridgett, Mar 01, 2004 12:00AM
Hello. About a week ago, I noticed 4 small white bumps, irregularly shaped, and slightly rough to the touch, on the shaft of my penis slightly below the head. They are whitish in color when the skin is loose, and more skin colored (and larger looking)when it is taught. I went to my doctor to have them checked out and he said that they were, in his opinion, "something viral," but not an STD and not something to worry about. He did not name the type of virus that might have caused them, and they don't appear like Molluscum in that they don't have dimples (that I can tell). So, my question: Are there other relatively benign, and non sexually transmitted, viruses which might cause these bumps? I am in a sexual relationship with a girlfriend, who has taken an STD test as well as a pap smear. Many thanks.

I think you should see another doctor with a clearer understanding of STD's.  The bumps you describe are very likely cysts rather than warts, but you need a definitive diagnosis.  There are two viruses which could be relevant, as you obviously know: HPV or molluscum.  Calling it "viral but not warts" suggests a certain fuzziness on the concept.  For the reassurance you are likely to deserve, I advise you either to call your doctor and ask for clarification, or if that is unavailable or unconvincing, to see another doctor.

Best.
