dry scalp or dandruff

by JTH411, Dec 22, 2007 09:39PM
Hello, i have had a issue with a dry scalp for about 3 years now. it has seemed to get worse over time. I shaved my hair about a year ago short, and when i did i noticed like 70% of my head was read. The redness went away and has not returned. my head does not seem overly oily and does not itch much at all. How do i know the difference from dry scalp and dandruff? thnks

Hi,
It is difficult to differentiate between a dry scalp and dandruff. But both are very different. Dandruff is in fact associated with an oily scalp and is due to shedding of dead skin cells off the scalp.
Get yourself examined by a dermatologist and then a diagnosis would be obtained. Also the management differs in both cases accordingly.
Dandruff would need medicated shampoos and topical application creams and you need to keep your head and scalp clean.
Dryness would need a conditioner, adequate hydration etc.
Hope this helps.
Good luck.
