effects of doxycyl to liver

by asm5581, Oct 04, 2008 11:57AM
Can doxycycl cause liver damage if not properly checked while consuming it? Are physicians supposed to check your liver before and during ingestion of this medication?

Hi
Liver damage, allergic reaction, or vision changes are seen in less than 1 percent of people taking doxycycline. These are usually seen on prolonged usage of the medication. The medication needs caution while being administered to persons with liver damage and may require dose adjustment and some special monitoring like liver and kidney function tests.
It is always advisable that patients should inform their doctor about any prior liver or kidney disease whenever doxycycline is prescribes to them.
The other common side effects include an upset stomach, skin reaction to sunlight, or unexplained rash and sometimes serious ones like watery diarrhea or fever. In such situations, one should stop taking the antibiotic and notify your healthcare provider immediately.

Hope it helps.
