What layers of the epidermis could a dermatologist safely remove and still allow for epidermis regeneration?

There are 5 epidermal layers:

Epidermis is divided into the following 5 sublayers or strata:

Stratum corneum
Stratum lucidum
Stratum granulosum
Stratum spinosum
Stratum germinativum (also called "stratum basale")

The deepest layer which is the stratum germinativum or stratum basale is responsible for generation of new skin cells. The stratum corneum is the most superficial and this is the layer which sloughs off and may readily scab off. An intact dermis is also essential for new skin generation since it is responsible for providing nutrients to the more superficial layers. The dermis contains the nerve endings and blood vessels.

So retaining the deepest layer and an intact dermis is necessary for skin regeneration.
