ezcema on my 21 month old daughters face

by lisa, Jan 29, 2001 12:00AM
my daughter has ezcema (eczema) on her face. i have seen 6 different doctors and they all tell me she will out grow it.. i have tried so many different creams, and not one of them help.. she developed this when she was 7 months old.it leaks out clear fluid, and all she does is scratches it. if i can get her to stop sracthing, i believe it will go away.. it is one her checks and her eyelids. it is red and scabby.. is there anything i can put on it to help it go away?? some doctors say bathe more and others say no.. which is it?? i have some cream and body wash that have no perfumes or dyes in it.. will that help?? i changed my laundry detergant to ALL hypoalergetic.. i feel so bad, cause all she does is itch it until it bleeds.. i could really use some help.. thanks.

Lisa:

Relax!  (Easy for me to say . . . )

Eczema tends to be most oozy and worst in small infants.  Even if she doesn't grow out of it altogether, it's very likely to moderate as she grows.  Foods and perfumes have little effect on eczema; meither does the frequency of washing.  Eczema does not scar, no matter how ugly it looks.

Medicated cremas suppress the symptoms, but don't stop the rash from coming back.  You need to take a deep breath and come to terms with that.  The good news is that there are gentle medications which you can use safely over and over as needed.  Have your dermatologist prescribe one.  My own favorite is desonide 0.05%.

She will survive and thrive, and by gum, so will you!

Best.

DEAR MOM

SOUNDS FAMILIAR.......ASK YOUR DOCTOR ABOUT
AKRODERMATITISENTROPATHICA (ZINC DEFICIENT)

OUR 7 MONTH TWINS HAD IT UNDIAGNOSED FOR 6 1/2
WEEKS BEFORE SOMEONE FIGURED IT OUT.

PREFERABLY A DERMATOLOGIST.

GOOD LUCK

One of my children had red swollen patches on his face and fingers - powerful creams would help but not eliminate it. I firmly believe the problem was solved when we took him off milk and used calcium fortified juice.

I TOOK MY CHILD OFF MILK AND DAIRY PRODUCTS.. THAT DIDN'T DO THE TRICK, SO WE KNOW IT WASN'T THE MILK. BUT THANK-YOU FOR YOUR HELP

I recommend removing all allergy-causing foods for at least two weeks before ruling out a food allergy. Many skin conditions which have no definite cause are caused by allergies. My sister suffered from ezcema (eczema) for 25 years before discovering she was allergic to dairy products. It also explains why many children get ezcema (eczema) and grow out of it; the body develops an immunity and stops reacting.

Its easy to stick to eating fresh fruit and vegies, and meats. Anything that you could grow/raise in your backyard...if you wanted to!

P.S. I've found many companies sneak milk powder into products like crackers and granola bars, and its extremely hard to avoid butter and chocolate.

Although this may not be the cause, its still a really healthy way to eat, and you'll feel better anyway.
