fingernail and toenail symptoms

by Nakki, Mar 20, 2009 09:31AM
I am desperate to get some kind of answer or direction.  Looking back, I have probably had nails issues for about 4 years but didn't put it together.  It is at a point now that I went to see my physician for the pain and symtoms.  Here are my symptoms:  My left thumb and right big toe both are raised at the end and pulling away from the skin.  About half way down on both.  They are a bit more rounded and raised.  Some days these nails hurt more than others and it really depends on if the nail is pulling away more.  I have lost both big toe nails before and I have big toe pain after doing any exercise.  (Yes, I have tried new and larger shoes) Other symptoms on my finger nails are horizontal ridges, not like beau's lines.  These are short horizontal lines that look like the nail was damaged but it wasn't, at least not to my knowledge.  These are on several fingers and on some nails these horizontal ridges extend in a vertical fashion on the nail from top to bottom.  I also have large white half moons on my thumbs and some nails that extend half the nail.  I get conflicting messages that this is good and bad.  I have had complete blood work for anemia and other stuff and I do not have psoriasis.  My physician told me this is not a fungus.  So what is it?  He didn't know!  How overwhelming is that?  Can anyone help me with this one?  Thanks for all your responses in advance!!
