fungus

by class101, Apr 02, 2008 09:01PM
Hello Dr.
My 11 year old son about a month ago developed a rash just on the side of his neck.  It slowly went onto the other side of his neck but has now turned brown and looks like spots.  I was told it was a fungus and the the only treatment would be to take Nizoral once and take another dose after a week.  I have tried to look up this fungus on the internet and have had no luck.  There is no other signs anywhere on his body. Please let me know if this is the only way to clear this problem and also is it contagous.

Thank you,

Hi,

Was your son assessed by your physician?

The rash that you have noted on your son,did this start as something red with defined borders?

Does it have scales?

Is it flat or elevated? Is it shiny?

Is the rash itchy?

A fungal infection may be a likely diagnosis.Do not apply anything on the rash or take any medications without getting a proper evaluation from the physician. It is best to have an objective test done.Microscopic examinations of the skin scrapings may help ascertain a diagnosis of fungal infection. If this is a fungal infection, application of topical antifungal cream may be able to help relieve the condition.
