This may be a viral exanthem or a rash secondary to a viral infection.Aside from the rash being red and splotchy would you be able to note if this has a regularRegular insulin pattern? Like, is this a lacy or wavy rash?
I suggest you have your son evaluated by a physician just to identify what could have caused this.An underlying allergic reaction should be ascertained to prevent future episodes.
Hello, I am a 28 year old man. I also have red rash on my chest and back but not that widespread maybe 100 bumps in all. These spots don't itch but have noticed that some of them are peeling skin. Most of these spots are about the size of a pencil eraser whith one spot on my back being slighly larger but like 2 put together. I haven't changed anything in my enviornment or detergent. Also I have no known allergies. Just trying to figure what this might be considering I dont' have health insurance.
For how long have you been experiencing this condition?
Is this a chronic skin condition or has this only occurred recently?
One differential for your condition is pityriasis rosea. The cause of pityriasis rosea is unknown.
"The cause is unknown. Pityriasis rosea is not a sign of any internal disease, nor is it caused by a fungus, a bacteria, or an allergy. There is recent evidence suggesting that it may be caused by a virus since the rash resembles certain viral illnesses, and occasionally a personfeels slightly ill for a short while just before the rash appears. However, this has not been proven. Pityriasis rosea does not seem to spread from person to person and it usually occurs only once in a lifetime."
Did you have any associated flulike symptoms like a cough or nasal discharge?
I suggest that you have this assessed and evaluated by your physician. Pityriasis is a primary differential. If you have a history of allergic reactions, it is best that a prompt consult be done since you may need prompt management.

I have just been experiencing this for about a week now. I have never had anything like this before and don't have any allergies that I know of. Nothing had changed in my enviornment and I take no medications. It does sound most like Pityriasis rosea and from the research I have seen. I will ride it out a while longer and if anything changes I will go see a Doctor. There have been no other symptoms with the spots, no flu or cold or anything. Thank you very much for the response it was extremely helpful.
ive been surfing the web for a good 30 minutes now and short of going in to the doctor asap this seems the best way to get an idea of whats going on. i noticed a splotch on my arm yesterday, maybe it had already been there for a day? it doesnt itch but it faded my regular tan around it a bit and then its a lite red on the bump-rash whatever it is. its not really raised to see but when you run your hand over it you can definately feel it. almost like dry skin. i wonder, could that be all it is? then today i noticed that there were more. maybe 5 or 6 in all now ranging from the size of a dime to the size of a nickel.all round or oval. they're only on my arms (mostly upper) and i spotted one on my back just about an hour ago. i havent been bit by anything, at least anything that i felt and i dont have any allergies. no fever, headache or anything like that. im hoping it will go away on its own but i thought ide get some input. thanks!
How old is your son?
Does he have any history of any allergies?
