hair follicle infection/nerve damage

by smoke, Jul 30, 2003 12:00AM
My problem began in the late spring of 2000 when I started to notice my buttocks and center back of my thighs had a burning feeling while sitting too long-30 minute drive from home to work.  It progressed to where I could not sit down more than 5 mins.  The uncomfortable area includes center back of thighs, area just above hips, across back and someitmes upper back.  I consuled dermatologist who prescribed topical creams-minor relief.  I have used most everey topical cream, salve, et. OTC and prescription.  In July of 2000 had unrelated illness and used antibiotics for several weeks with some improvement.  Off my feet for long periods but return to normal activities brought problems back.  March 2001 was seen in Dermatology Clinic at Ochsner's in New Orleans.  Diag. with gram negative infection and received 14 Rocephin 500 mg. injections.  Before injections each hair follicle had raised red bumps, no hair in this area.  Injections made significant difference with reduction in symptoms.  Several mos. later symptoms back.  Went to Ochsner's again.  Told infection gone now have hair follicle nerve damage.  Prescribed Minocycline 100 mgs.  Saw again and prescribed Salicylic 3% in Keri 240 ML.  Over this time I have also used Elidel 1% CR 100 GM Nova, Betameth60/cetaphil 180 and Triamcinolone 0.1%, and Amitriptyline 25 MG  Right now I have very small raised red bumps all of buttocks area and slightly above hips.  Not able to sit or sleep on back.  Heat plays a part.  I wear loose fitting cotton underwear and am soaking in Domeboro solution.  The Domeboro gives some relief for nighttime sleeping but symptoms return with sitting.  Had skin biopsy which was negative  Whatever I have, it burns, heat aggravates it and I can't sit down for lay on my back for any lenght of time.  How do you heal hair follicle nerve damage?  HELP

I'm afraid I don't have much to offer.  Your symptoms sound neurological, not dermatologic.  The bumps you see may well be follicles, but no folliculitis I have ever seen or heard of affects the nerves.  I therefore can't make much sense of the term, which you say you heard at the Ochsner Clinic: "hair follicle nerve damage."  Nor can I interpret the culture of gram negative bugs in light of these burning and heat.  I think you need to discuss with the doctors who examined and tested you.  Please ask them what they meant by hair follicle nerve damage.

Sorry I can't be more specific.
