hair problems after chemotherapy

hair problems after chemotherapy

My hair has been regrowing for about one year following chemotherapy.  The texture is brittle and irregular.  I intermittently have an itchy and oily scalp.  Will my hair ever return to its former texture. If yes, appros. how long will that take? What can I do now to reduce symptoms?  Is there anything I should not be doing?  Thank you

There is little written about changing hair texture after chemotherapy, but from time to time people tll me their hair has changed after pregnancy, chemotherapy, or other major "shock to the system."  I really cannot give you an expected timetable for recovery.

To reduce symptoms, I would suggest you consult a hair stylist, who can recommend conditioners and other techniques which are used for brittle hair, regardless of cause.

For itchy, oily scalp (which may or may not be a consequence of chemo), you can start with over-the-counter shampoos containing such ingredients as selenium sulfide, salicilyic acid, tar, or ketoconazole.  Ask your druggist for brand names.  Try each in turn until one of them works.  If none does, ask a dermatologist to prescribe a medicated shampoo or scalp lotion.

Best.
