I started a beta blocker (Atenolol) about two months ago, and recently noticed diffuse hair shedding. Even eyebrows are involved. I suspect the Atenolol is the cause since hair loss is listed as a rare side effect.
My question is: Must I stop this medication in order for my hair to regrow? All of the beta blockers list hair loss as a side effect. Is there any hope that my hair will regrow without stopping my heart medication? I am a female
and I've experienced the same in the past and actually, at present due to beta blockers. I was initally put on Nadalol, which caused noticable hair thinning for a few months before my Dr both switched me to a different med, Kerlone, and cut
my dose in half. I was on Kerlone, 2.5mg per day, for years, NO PROBLEMS, my hair was fine, until now, they stopped making Kerlone. It is unavailable from the manufacturor for unknown reasons. I'm now on the kerlone generic, betaxalol, starting to notice the same gradual hair loss ****. I put up with it for all for 2 weeks before cutting my dose in half, now to 1/8 pill/day ... and will likely ween myself off completely in another week or so. Have had it w these drugs. And My Dr doesnt take my hair loss complaints seriously, citing it as a "rare" side effect. Am getting married in November, hair is the priority now!!!
The good news for you is, this is completely reversible - but you do have to stop taking the med, or cut
