herpes tongue Continued

by mark127, Oct 12, 2002 12:00AM
Thanks doctors for helping me. This is continuation of previous post by mark127. While I was waiting for culture results the woman and I went to another clinic another doctor. He examined me and said he didn't think it to be herpes because I didn't have any other symtoms. I asked if herpes was painful without  touching it, he replied 90% of the time. I never had any pain or itch or burning. If I didn't see it I would never know it was there. She told him she had a fever blister and had herpes simplex on lip since childhood  (now she is 50,i'm 48)
The doctor said "it has been reported" that oral herpes can be contracted on genitals but not generally. She complained of burning and reddness and was examined. Doctor found no evidence of herpes. No test performed. She had recently had a yeast infection. After we had sex she said her genital area hurt even a couple days later. Before the results of my culture were in I went to another state working.  pilot. I noticed a canker sore inside my lower lip on the soft tissue, my tongue was yellow and little red spots on the tip. I thought herpes and started taking the valtrex I got from first doctor, just in case. I went to another clinic and doctor said Thrush from anti biotics. not herpes..gave me a perscription rinse. He said he didn't think it was genital herpes either, said I didn't respond like herpes, he agreed with friction infection. By now the wound was just about healed, again no yellow scab just small white scales in some places. this was about 13 days into it.
Ive been on the Valtrex now for 8 days two, two times a day.
I've been off the keflex for a week, but my tonge is now brown black and the red spots are still there. Two days ago I notices two areas of reddness on head of penis. No blisters on one but tiny somethings on the other, but seem as if it is just part of the texture of the head just inflamed. no pain no itch. Today one area is completly gone the other is fading. of all the visits my temp ran from 97-99.2.

Questions..90% of time positive culture within 72 hr
90% time herpes is painful and feverish with groin pain. Could the test be false positive and how?
Everthing I read says test should be within 48 hours of first signs. mine was 7 days later.
It has been three weeks since first signs, could the reddness on head be a reoccurrance?? But I read on this forum that reoccurrance should be in original site, this is on opposite end.

And if I'm on valtrex for over a week am I also one who it just isn't working for? I saw pictures on this site of penis fungal infection/yeast on head of penis..my redness looked simular in fact they look similar to intial out break. Could I be falling into the 10th percentile in all areas, culture, pain, location of reoccurrance?? or are 5 out of the 6 doctors correct and I don't have herpes. But a false positve?
Could what is going on in mouth be related to what is showing up on penis? Should I take blood test and what kind and when?
Thanks

Herpes rarely affects the inside of the mouth.  I don't see how you could have genital herpes and oral at the same time.

The penis redness doesn't sound like herpes at all.  The fact that you're on Valtrex already makes hepres even less likely.

I agree that a positive culture 7 days later is a little fishy.

I therefore suggest 2 things: 1) Wait a month and get a blood test for herpes antibodies.  If it's positive, that tells you nothing--it just means you had a herpes infection sometime in the past but not where.  If it's negative, that's pretty strong evidence you never had it.  2) At the first sign of another penile outbreak, get seen right away for another culture.  Of course, if it never comes back, that's even better .. .

Take care.

Thank you Dr.Rockoff. It is great to get your information. It's seems difficult to talk to a doctor in the office setting simply because they are so contrained for time. I hope you don't mind if I ask more questions as they come to me. thank you for patience and time
