An 8-year old girl has a hole on the left side of her face (2 cm away from the ear) which has been in existence for years, approximately 2 years. Discharge coming out is clear and odorless. No pain, no other symptoms manifested. Topical treatments has been tried per dermatologist but failed. Pls address. Thank you.

Hi,

Are there other symptoms present? If there was no trauma to this area, this could be preauricular pits or fissures, which are located near the front of the ear and mark the entrance to a sinus tract.  These tracts may become infected, leading to cellulitis or abscess. Complete excision of the cyst or sinus tract may be undertaken in cases of recurrent infection. Talk to your doctor about this or have this evaluated further by an ear specialist.

Take care and keep us posted.
