Yes, you can be contagious with no symptoms (through asymptomatic shedding) and I believe that it stays with you for life (and doesn't "shed off" after two year)

Herpes virus may be dormant or inactive in the body for a certain period until a stressor or trigger is present. It is true , that you need not present with cold sores or blisters and yet have the virus in the body. However , not everyone carries the virus with them.
