itchy arms

by dg5471, Aug 01, 2008 06:11PM
I have been reading alot of the posts from others regarding itchy upper arms.  Like all of these people, I have suffered periodically from this.  I have been to several dermatologists over the years, given lots of topical RX's, but nothing really helped and I think most of them thought it was all in my head or stress induced. About 2 years ago, because of anemia and having nothing to do with my itching arms, I was given an iron infusion.  After that, I hadn't experienced any episodes until just a few weeks ago.  My husband insisted that I have blood work done again, and yes, my iron was extremly low again.  I just did another iron infusion again today and am hoping that this has been my problem all along. If not I will keep searching, but just wanted to share a bit on info that might be helpful to others.  Yes, I do feel crazy when these itching periods are going on and it can not be described to anyone unless they have experienced it.

I too have the upper arm itching - both arms only in the summer time. It's the heat that sets it off. Have tried almost everything and nothing works that good. Have been prescribed Ativan in the past that worked well but you can't go anywhere on it because it makes you so sleepy.

Have asked all of my doctors over the past 10-12 years - as long as I have had it. Not one of them knew anything about it. I was referred to a Dermatologist but could not afford the copay which was $50 PLUS any charges left over after insurance pays - it would have been in the hundreds so I could not go. But to be perfectly frank here. I don't believe a Dermatologist would have been able to help because in my research I've come to the conclusion that no doctor really knows the answer to this. It truly is an unknown phenomenon because even though it may be considered RARE - there are THOUSANDS of people out there with the same condition - and none of them have been able to get a clear dx of this condition.
