itchy burning rash. what could it be?

I got this rash that seems like it started yesterday on my chest. It itched like crazy. It was itching in the early afternoon. Then tonight my arms started to itch and it started to spread. It is on my chest, upper arms, upper back, and sides. Not in armpits or place warm.It will itch and then it will burn. It feels like a light sunburn. I went to the doctors because i was worried about it being scabies and he said he does not think it is scabies. Just to watch it and if it gets worse then go back to the doctors. If not then it was nothing. What are the possibilities that it could be? Help!!!????

I am a 49 yr old female and have had a burning itching, painful red rash on my hands and forearms for 3 months now. Saw 3 different dr.'s so far. One thought contact dermatitis the other thought possible ringworm/exzema/autoimmune issues.  And the third had no idea. It starts as small red bumps then goes into  round/ovel shapes and then starts spreading from round spots to cover a larger and larger area. After more time passes...it starts to almost resemble a burn. It scales a little bit...but not alot. Its very dry and uncomfortable. It has really caused a problem in my life...as it is very irritating and keeps me at home and in pain, not to mention the fact that it looks horrible!! I have used vaniply ointment, antifungal cream, prescription steroid cream,st ives intensive healing cranberry seed and grapeseed oil lotion, vitamin E skin cream, coconut oil,bag balm, anti itch cream, vaseline, and have been on oral prednisone 2 x a day for a week and now once a day everyday. I am frustrated and upset and just want my life back. Please share ANY of your thoughts. Thank you in advance.  Darla in Washington State.

MEDICAL PROFESSIONAL
Hello,
If the spots have suddenly appeared then it may be due to an allergic reaction but other possibilities like viral rashes, pityriasis rosea etc also need to be ruled out. These may also present with spots on abdomen. In pityriasis rosea, initially, a primary plaque, called a herald patch, is seen. Then it is followed by a distinctive, generalized rash 1-2 weeks later. The rash lasts approximately 2-6 weeks and is found in a Christmas tree pattern over the trunk and abdomen.

It is very difficult to precisely confirm a diagnosis without examination and investigations and the answer is based on the medical information provided. For exact diagnosis, you are requested to consult your doctor. I sincerely hope that helps. Take care and please do keep me posted on how you are doing.
