little white bumps

my son who is 3 has had this for about a year or more. He has little patches of skin on his sides of face and a spot on the upper back toward his shoulder. they are round and have little white bumps that form a circle and fade out toward the outer edges of the skin. After a while it becomes very lite almost white colored is does not spread much and does not itch any. It is never red or scaley or oozing or anything like that. You can almost not even notice. but it bothers me very much because i notice it everyday. we have tried many ointments but nothing works. could somebody please tell me what it is. thanks

MEDICAL PROFESSIONAL
Hi,

For light colored skin patches, one differential here is tinea versicolor. This is a fungal infection and this may be acquired from skin to skin contact. Are there other family members with a similar skin condition?

Fungal infections may be chronic ( lasts for 6 months or more ) and as in the case of tinea versicolor may not readily resolve.Tinea versicolor may actually cause the affected skin to stay lighter than the normal skin.

I suggest that you have this assessed by a dermatologist.Microscopic evaluation of skin scrapings from the affected areas may help ascertain if this is caused by a fungal infection.
