nail psoriasis

by beautifulxdisastero7, Sep 30, 2008 12:24AM
my toenails look thick, yellow, flaky and they've been like that since i was little. my big toenail on my right foot actually came off a couple months ago. i'm 8 months pregnant. and since i've gotten pregnant my fingernails have began to become flaky and really thick and yellow. one thumb nail, one pointer fingernail, and one pinky nail. my thumb and pointer finger nail are really really thick. and it hurts really bad it feels like my fingers are constantly smashed. my sister has psoriasis bad on her skin but not her nails and she mentioned one day that it could be nail psoriasis so i looked it up and i think thats what it is. but its so painful and before i got pregnant they were a little discolored but since i've gotten pregnant they have gotten so bad and they just really hurt. and i can't clip them too much because it hurts to. how can i get it to stop hurting so bad because it hurts to pick things up and my baby is due in less than 2 months and i'm going to have to pick him up and take care of him and its just so painful i don't see how i'm going to be able to.

It is possible it is bacterial. Is the underneath nail bed flakey? Try soaking them in betadine solution. If the soreness goes away, then start cleaning the dead unneath the nail out and cut the nail close to where it stops and repeat it until the nail bed catches up with the nail. Hopes this helps. A dermatologist can take a sample and have it diagnosed if you have not been to one. If it is a fungus he can give you ointment to put on it, and it will take a long time to clear it. They make an oral med for it but they have found it can cause liver problems and many drs will not give it to anyone because of it. It is a long term medication and you would have to take it for atleast 6 months. You can get both of them from the soil. Soak them often and for an hour atleast. Let me know what happens. If you have not been to a dermatologist, I would go there first. It may save you a lot of time. RJ
