new growth

new growth

I am a 25 year old female who in the last six months has noticed darkening and increased growth of arm, leg, and facial hair.  I have since puberty been troubled by hair between breasts, on stomach, abdomen, etc.  The new growth on my face sent  me to a doctor.  I have normal levels of testosterone, DHEA, and androstenedione with normal periods.  I have been on oral birth control for 5 yrs.  The new hair on my face is light and not thick, which doesn't sound consistent with hirsutism. But moustache, chin, and other areas are dark and fairly thick. Do I just accept that some women have more hair than others?  My doctor just dismissed it since hormone levels are normal, but I feel like there must be some reason for new growth? Help!

Molly:

I understand your concern, but basically, you should be pleased and relieved that hormone levels are normal.  There is a lot of variation in how much hair grows on people, where, and when.  If the new, darker hair troubles you, you should look into laser hair removal.  The technology is now available to make your hair thinner and less, without taking up part of your week for the rest of your life.

Best.
