port wine stain

MY THREE YEAR OLD DAUGHTER HAS A LARGE PORT WINE STAIN BIRTHMARK COVERING HER ENTIRE RIGHT LEG.  IS IT SAFE TO TAKE HER ON A FOUR HOUR FLIGHT ABROAD TO A HOT COUNTRY.  HAVE HEARD SHE SHOULD NOT ALLOW SUNLIGHT TO GET ON THE BIRTHMARK AND THAT SHE COULD BE AT A HIGHER RISK OF DVT DUE TO THE FLIGHT.

Hello,
A port wine stain is a vascular birthmark consisting of superficial and deep dilated capillaries in the skin which produce a reddish to purplish discolouration of the skin. It is no use trying any creams on these kind of birth marks and it shows good to excellent response using Ruby, Alexandrite or ND YAG lasers. Multiple treatments are required to eliminate the collections of pigment cells seen deep in the dermis.

Unfortunately I have never heard of port wine stains causing any DVT. It is better to discuss it with her pediatrician in this regards.
It is very difficult to precisely confirm a diagnosis without examination and investigations and the answer is based on the medical information provided. For exact diagnosis, you are requested to consult your dermatologist. I sincerely hope that helps. Take care and please do keep me posted on how you are doing.
