Bacteria and yeasts which are normally resident on the skin multiply in such environments and may result in further damage to the skin. To determine which organism is responsible, a swab for microscopy and culture may be done to rule out bacteria or a scraping to rule out fungi. Treatment depends on the underlying cause, if identified, and on which micro-organisms are present in the rash. Bacteria may be treated with topical antibiotics while yeasts and fungi may be treated with topical antifungals. Keep the area clean and dry. Try to avoid scratching to prevent secondary infection.
