In the past 6 months, every time I sit in a tub of hot water, immediately after getting out my feet and lets become red, itchy, burning prickly. I take a benadry and it goes away in 30 min. or so. I think it is related to the hot water not soap, shampoo, or any thing like that. What is going on?
This could be due to irritation, dermatitis, or from infection such as pseudomonas folliculitis or hot tub folliculitis. The pseudomonas bacteria that cause this form of folliculitis thrive in a wide range of environments, including hot tubs whose chlorine and pH levels are not well regulated. Within eight hours to five days of exposure to the bacteria, a rash of red, round, itchy bumps will appear that later may develop into small pus-filled blisters. (ref: http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/folliculitis/DS00512) Folliculitis may go away without medical treatment within a couple of days. Warm compresses and anti-itch creams may help, However, if it persists or recurs, have this evaluated by your doctor for proper management. Take care and regards.
