rash on 5 yr old

This morning discovered blotchy irregular redness on by sons abdomen and back,especially
around the waist band.He had been wearing his old superman polyester PJ's.
Could this be some sort of heat rash or worse?

Your son might have had some allergic reaction like allergic dermatitis or rash due to the clothes. It would be difficult to assess without having a look at the lesions.

You need to maintain a good personal hygiene and thoroughly wash the area several times daily. Avoid using any cosmetic products. You may try calamine lotion locally which has a soothing effect.

The most commonly used oral treatments are antihistaminics (such as cetirizine, loratidine, benadryl available over the counter).  However, if the symptoms persist or increase in frequency or intensity you should immediately consult a doctor.
