recurrent wound

My boyfriend has a problem with acne on his behind.  He picked at a pimple and it became infected.  It swelled up to about the size of a grape and then popped with pus and blood coming out of it.  We peroxided and polysporined and kept it bandaged, but every time it seems to be almost healed, it swells up and pops again.  This has been going on for 2 months now!  And last friday, the skin surrounding the wound became hard and when the swelling popped this time, black chunks came out.  He is loath to let a doctor see his bum.  He's still hoping it will just go away.  What do we do?

He should see a doctor immediately before there is secondary uncontrollable infection.

There are several treatment options available for acne - topical application creams, oral medications, laser treatment etc.

It would be best to consult your dermatologist to decide about the best treatment option in your case.

Comedonal (non-inflammatory) acne: local treatment with azelaic acid, salicylic acid, topical retinoids, benzoyl peroxide.

Mild papulo-pustular (inflammatory) acne: benzoyl peroxide or topical retinoids, topical antibiotics (such as erythromycin).

Moderate inflammatory acne: benzoyl peroxide or topical retinoids combined with oral antibiotics (tetracyclines). Isotretinoin is an option.

Severe inflammatory acne, nodular acne, acne resistant to the above treatments: isotretinoin also known as Accutane, can be prescribed by a doctor.
