red spots around lips

by concernedtl, Oct 25, 2007 01:12PM
hey everybody. i noticed a few white bumps right on the outside of the border of my upper lip about 9 months ago. my doctor later said they were just sebaceous glands or something and there is nothing to do about them, they will be there forever.

The thing is, however, that these bumps have caused all the skin about a mm or two around them to turn red and textured like my lip. since then, i have noticed more and more bumps on the outside of my lip line and different parts of my upper lip line get really red from time to time. This causes the shape of my upper lip to look really weird. i get really self conscious about it and im sure it doesnt help that i end up licking my lips all the time, making them chapped.

i thought that because im 19 and my facial hair hasnt really grown in that much yet that it might have something to do with mustache hairs getting thicker near my lips?

i really have no idea though, does anybody have any idea what this might be, or how i might make the redness or sebaceous glands to go away?

thanks

Hi,

This could be swelling due to inflammation of the sebaceus lands. You would need to consult your skin specialist and get a review.

Talk to your doctor and discuss whether steroid local application creams would help in your case.

Some causes of the symptoms you mention, could be lip biting, lip licking, Vit.B2 deficiency, smoking, overexposure to sun and ill fitting dentures. In extreme cases, this could be due to bacterial or fungal skin infection.

You need to drink plenty of water daily – around 1.5 – 3 litres per day and eat a balanced diet. Do not keep your lips dry; apply lip balm which contains sunscreen – preferably a medicated one.

If you have cracks at the corner of your mouth it indicates B2 deficiency in this case you need to take B2 supplements.

If the symptoms still persist, consult your skin specialist or dermatologist.

Let us know about how you are doing and if you have any other doubts.

Regards.
