scaling and itchiness of the scalp

by Teedub167, Apr 30, 2002 12:00AM
Ever since i moved to the east coast, during the winter months my scalp would get dry and itch.I thought maybe it was the cold weather only.Just two months ago i started to develope one inch dry crusty patches in the back of my head near the neckline.I was told it was somekind of scalp infection?I did some research and could not get any true answers, anyway it has gotten worse. My scalp would dry up so bad that it felt like it shrunk and the itch would be so intense i literally dunk my head in cold water to relieve it.The point i'm trying to get at is that my scalp gets dry, scaly very itchy.sometimes when i run acomb thru my hair, large flakes would come out. What can i do about it and is this related to fugus and is there something i can use temporarily. It has consume 75percent of my scalp mostly around both of my ears& hairline above my forehead. Now i'm starting to see the samething in eyebrows and mustache. Also is condition transferable to others.PLEASE REPLY A.S.A.P, oh the itch is unbearable!!!!                                                                                       sincerely  teedub167.

What you describe sounds like seborrhea or psoriasis of the scalp.  It feels dry but isn't.  Cause is unknown.  It happens at any age from infancy on up and comes and goes.  It is not fungal, nor is it related to weather, geography, or hair-care preparations.

My advice:  Go to the drugstors and get a therapeutic shampoo (T-Gel, Nizoral) and use daily.  See a doctor for a prescription for a cortsione-based scalp lotion.  You should get very quick relief, though you may have to treat from time to time to control symptoms.

Best.
