seborrheic dermatitis

by Sebderm, Jul 02, 2007 08:01AM
Hi

I have been suffering from seborrheic dermatitis for the last ten year, recently it has started to get worse and it has affected my  chin area badly.  I am fed up of using Hydrocortisone cream and antifungals, at present I am prescribed on  Daktacort but I don't like it as it makes your face look very greasy.  As my face produces vast amount of sebum (it is greasy) and has flaky skin, what kind of emollient can be used baring in mind that light mosturisers (such as aqueous cream) are still too greasy for me.  What other treatments can I use?  I am Surprised that a mosturiser has not been developed for people who have oily skin yet who's skin is peeling.

Hey there,
I also have seb dermatitis around my nose, and have had it for the past year almost. Its horrible and makes you feel worse when you know it cant be treated. I did research though and realized those who suffer from seb derm create too much sebum. Researchers have also made a link between malassezia globosa fungus that lives naturally on the skin to be a cause for seb dermatitis. I looked up anything that might possibly cure this horrible predicament, and noticed something called pyrithione zinc. They have it in tiny quantities in anti dandruff shampoos. What it does is it actively reduces or controls the amount of sebum created when your sebum glands go crazy. It also is an anti-fungal agent and attacks malassezia globosa. You can buy it in 25% concentrated sprays. Just search on amazon.com for pyrithione zinc spray. I'm going to get hold of it and see if it works. I've used hydrocortizone creams, even apple cider vinegar, tea tree oil, and notthiing else works.
Here's a good idea though. Go on a detox. Literally for like a week or something. Drink green tea for a week, and apples maybe but thats it. Your skin will start to calm down.
Hope this works.

Hi

I understand this bothers you and dermatitic skin conditions can really be worrisome. When treating a particular disease condition, we usually deal with the cause as much as possible. This is the only way that the condition may be treated or cured. For seborrheic dermatitis however, the cause of this disease condition is not well defined. Fungal infection has been implicated. Weather, diet and even excessive emotions have been associated with flares of seborrheic dermatitis.

You may wash the area with selenium sulfide shampoo. You may do this twice a week and see if the skin improves. You may do this while taking a bath. If the condition worsens then stop the application. Seborrheic dermatitis may require oral antibiotics if an overlying bacterial infection is present.
