Shingles or herpes zoster is caused by the varicella-zoster virus that causes chickenpox. The first sign of shingles is often burning or tingling pain, or sometimes numbness or itch, in one particular location on only one side of the body. After a few days or a week, a rash of fluid-filled blisters, similar to chickenpox, appears in this area. The most common location for shingles is a band or a dermatome, and not sporadic or anywhere in the body. After being infected with chicken pox, the virus becomes dormant and stays in the nerve tract. When the virus reactivates, the virus moves back down the long nerve fibers that extend from the sensory cell bodies to the skin. The location of the rash or blisters of shingles depends on the location of the nerve tract and where it innervates.
