skin discoloration

by MMillekeys, Apr 24, 2006 12:00AM
Dear Dr.
I am a 50 year old, medium dark-skinned Afro-American male. For many years I have been living with a darkening of skin around my neck. Most recently I have also experienced a darkening of skin on my face. What might be causing this? I live on the East coast and don't spend much time in the sun.(though I did in my youth while growing up in Mississippi)

Sincerely,
MMillekeys

I'm only guessing, but the neck coloring may be acanthosis nigricans (Latin for "dark thickening).  Cause may be diabetes, hormones, internal issues, or family heritage.  As for the face, I can't say.  basically, what you need to do is to see a doctor in person doe proper evaluation and treatment, if available.

Best.
