skin patches

I am not quite sure what to call what I have had on my skin for the past 11 years. My arms and shoulders have numerous white patches, which at times are dry. But I have been also known to acquire dark patches on my skin at my joints (behind my knees, at my elbows on the inside). It has been recommended that I use Selsun Blue shampoo to remove my dark patches. These dark patches have also grown increasingly under my breasts. It has also been suggested that I not use any cream with coco butter. A couple of years ago, I was placed on medication for these patches, but nothing occurred. Do you have any idea what these contradicting patches on my skin could be. My brother also has it, but his entire back has lost most of its colour. We are both white, with one parent being from Portugal. As children we tanned easily and had olive skin. We have lost a fair amount of color due to the patches. Any clues?????

You might have a superficial fungus infection, but I doubt it.  You may have thickening of the skin, called hyperkeratosis, which can also be treated, though very slowly, with medications that gradually thin extra layers of skin.  Or you may have eczema, which can be treated with cortisone creams.  You need to work wioth a dermatologist on this.  But I can't see any of these possibilities turning you entirely white.

im also tring to find out what these white patches are.  they started on my back and like you mentioned its like i dont have melanin there.  it has spread to my arms and a few on my neck also i have the dark patches under my breast.  if anyone knows anyhting about this i would appreciate info
