what is petechiae

Petechiae are red purple spots on the body caused by a minor hemorrhage that is broken capillary blood vessels. A hard bout of coughing or sneezing may sometimes lead to petechiae .That is perfectly harmless.Petechiae usually appear on the body in thrombocytopenia. Thrombocytopenia can be seen in infections, drug induced or mailgnancies.Non infectious conditions like scurvy, lupus, Kawasaki’s disease, aplastic anemia all can lead to thrombocytopenia.
