small sores under belly button

My boyfriend has a 3 inch patch of sores that are about an inch under his belly button, mostly on the right side.we noticed them a few days ago and they have spread a little closer to his belly button.They are about a millimeter and less in diameter and not very red. He says that they don't itch and are not painful.
We've had unprotected sex but do not have any of the symptoms.
I'm wondering if it could be some type of reaction to something, though we haven't used any lube or products that are applied to the skin.
