Hello There!
I have had a smelly scalp for a few years now and i wandered if anyone else also suffered from this. I wash my hair every other day but after the first day my scalp starts to smell. Iv used Sulphar Soap as this was apparently supposed to kill the fungus which thrives on the scalp but it hasn't worked. I used it for 3 weeks followed by Dial Antibacterial Bodywash as suggested on the smellscalp.com website. Iv even tried Tea tree shampoo but that doesn't work either..any other suggestions or a cure???

If somebody has a problem with a smelly scalp I found the cure!!! Peppermint oil! I wash my hair first, then  make a mask : 1 Tbs of Honey, 1 tsp of Almond oil, 1tsp of Argan oil , 5-8 drops of peppermint oil, I also add a bit of Aloe Vera conditioner and mix it all up.
I apply the mix on my whole hair, but most goes on my scalp - I massage it in for few moments. Then put a shower cap/clip foil, plastic bag on my hair and leave for 20-30 mins. Then rinse it. My scalp smells so lovely now. I can go a week without washing it and it still smells sweet!! :D Earlier it smelt awful just few hours after washing. Dry shampoo made smell even worse. I tried to wash my hair every second day, but thee smell was so bad on the second day that it made me feel sick. I managed to mask it a bit with a sweet orange oil. But nothing helped in the long run. I am so glad I found out about the peppermint oil. I hope it will help you too.

Red meat directly causes an odour from the scalp- this can be within hours of eating meat, and can last anywhere up to 2 weeks?

I used the exact same shampoo, Nizoral, for my scalp condition, but It's the actual SHAMPOOS that treat the fungus that cause the bad scalp odor. I've also tried the tar ones, those just made my scalp smell even worse. Now I use Psoriasin, SCENT FREE SHAMPOO, still get the bad smell, but not as bad. What I'de like to know is, why do these treatment shampoos make your scalp smell so damn nasty after one or two days?? I seriously get disgusted of myself, and it's not even my fault, since I have good hygiene and take care of myself. I smell like I never wash my hair... I guess life gives your these cards and you just have to play them, whether you got a good hand or not.

your problem your problem might be in pH imbalance and your scalp try to go to Sallys and ask  an associate for a pH imbalance shampoo they would help you out trust me its worth giving it right that's what I had and my scalp smells great

2 years ago, I told my GYN doctor about my smelly scalp and asked whether it could have originated as athlete's foot or jock itch that transferred to my scalp.  He prescribed 'CLOTRIMAZOLE and BETAMETHASONE DIPROPIONATE' cream.  It worked!  But only temporarily ( a couple of months).  

Smelly scalp can be caused by a ringworm infection on the scalp, called 'Tinea Capitis'.  It is kinda hard to cure a fungal infection of the scalp because the fungus actually infects the follicles!  The cream is only a topical treatment and not a cure.  There is a cure, but doctors are wary because it is hard on the liver.  Because the cream only works for a while (possibly months), I am now going to try the pills to try to get rid of the infection systemically.

Change your pillows often, wash and dry your towels, clothes, sheets, blankets, etc. in a dryer with high heat to kill any remaining fungi and bacteria.  I even washed the walls that I may have put my head on to prevent re-infecting myself over and over.  I threw out coats and hats.  I tried so many things.  I'm going to get a prescription for the pills.  

I think I may have caught the condition from my dog.  She developed mange and made my whole house smell.  My hair smells the way my dog did :(  (I really love and miss her, but I'm now scared to get anymore pets fearing that it will cause another infection)

More importantly, be very careful of beauticians that do not maintain clean utensils and practices.  Beauty and barber shops are the main culprits of picking up these types of infections.

  African Black Soap shampoo and conditioner... I washed my hair and it did not smell. still did not smell 24 hours later. was still not smelling 36 hours later. very excited. African Black Soap shampoo and conditioner got it at Walmart.

I've had this issue on and off for years.  I tried this and it really worked! I've used Head & Shoulders Citrus for years, but never in the way you've recommended.  I left it on for 30 minutes and showered.  Just after towel drying, I could see how much more bounce & body my hair had (I have super fine thin hair).   Using a blow-dryer and round brush, the results were even more so.. even without using my Big Sexy Root Boost Plus.  My hair had transformed & was easier to style.  Best thing, at the end of the day even after going for a 2 mile walk, my scalp still smelled fresh!  Second day hair is now a much less smelly affair & I don't have to worry about being close to people.   Thank you, thank you for sharing this tip... it really helped me a lot!

Hello, I had this issue off and on the past 3 years.  What I realized is those antibacterial, antifungal shampoos were actually making it worse.  I realized it when the smell went away for a while and then I swam in a chlorinated pool.  My scalp started smelling again..  My theory is my good bacteria died and the smelly ones were taking over.

So my suggestion is avoid all of those sulfur, anti dandruff shampoos for a week, don't touch your scalp, use regular shampoo and see what happens.  Good luck.

Try using mouthwash...dilute 1cup of mouthwash with water and use it as a last rinse...it helps...

A lot of people swore that candida overgrowth was the cause. A lot of people say its a scam, it may be, but a lot of the things you read about that cure candida also strengthen your immune system:
plenty of vegetables
exercise
cut down or eliminate sugar....

The SMELL WENT AWAY with doing all this while I was still using Ketoconazole 2% shampoo plus a drop of tea tree oil, I would leave it on for a few minutes every day, then rinse my hair. I ran out of both and used Pure and Basic Clarifying Shampoo that contains Apple Cider Vinegar. You probably have to order it off the internet, I've only been able to find it in one store.

I lather up well, rinse, then, lather up really well rubbing my fingers against my entire scalp, not missing any parts. This gets the sebum and other stuff off the scalp. I've been using this shampoo for half a year and it seems like either it or my diet has made the smell go away. Even afterwards I think it was on my face so I really started to wash my face with a lot of scrubbing and pressure to get the oils off of it. The smell is gone from my face too.

My best advice is to:

1. take probiotics
2. use omega 3s like flaxseed, chia seeds, walnuts or fish oil
3. cut down or eliminate sugar
4. eat whole grains and vegetables and fruits
5. wash scalp vigorously with shampoo that has ACV, don't use fingernails, only fingertips

This is probably caused by a yeast or fungus that goes out of control when your immune system isn't working well. So scrubbing well to get it off your skin and doing all you can to strengthen your immune system seems like the best way to get rid of it.

i used to wash and condition my hair...then put a scarf on my head to let it dry.  i used a scarf to help keep my hair straight so i would need to blow dry.  BUT covering my hair while it was still wet, caused it to smell sour.  So i stopped covering my hair and let it air dry...after 2-3 times the sour smell went away and i haven't had a problem since.

I have suffered with smelly scalp for 4 years and have tried most things but have not as yet found a cure, however, I have found that using Batiste Dry Shampoo makes my hair smell considerably less. I still have to wash my hair everyday but use the dry shampoo also as per insructiions. This helps when you are out and about and unable to wash your hair  Hope this is of some help.

Hello,  i've also had smelly scalp for years! and i have been very frustrated and embarrassed when being out in public during a hot day or a crowded room with smelly scalp.  What i did was mix baking soda with water just to get a thick mix and messaging it all throughout my hair.  I would let it sit for about 1 - 2 hours then take a shower/rinse WITHOUT shampoo.  since then i've been taking showers without using shampoo and my scalp has been odor free!  it doesn't condition your hair and will leave your hair feeling dry but it is something i can sacrifice to not have a smelly scalp.  I frequently will continue to use the baking soda and water to keep my scalp clean but have not done it in a while.  give it a try and see if it also works for you.  i know how frustrating it is and want to share my experience that does not call for you to see a useless dermatologist nor buy sulfur soap or prescription shampoo that i have also tried.  please let me know if this helps.

best remedy and natural for itchy scalp is apple cider vinegar mixed with half water and vinegar in a spray bottle about 2 o/z size spray all over your scalp leave on for half hour shampoo and condition twice a week till all is well.

I'd had this condition for well over 6 years.  It is from mercury fillings aka silver fillings.  I had 14 of them replaced in 2005 and still suffer with the odor.  I now realize that it  takes a long time to get mercury out of the brain.

I had same problem, and a friend suggested i rinse my scalp with salt water and leave over night, i then used t tree shampoo following morning and am repeating procedure daily for a while, 2 days in and hair smells fine. Hope this helps.
