tiny bumps on lips

I suddenly have developed tiny bumps on my upper lip. A few months ago this happened in just one little patch but it went away, and I can't remember if I did anything. But just a few days ago they appeared again on both sides of my upper lip. Then, the next day they had spread and now go all the way along the ridge of my upper lip. They aren't particularly noticeable except they change the shape of my lip, making it look smaller than it was in the places where they are on the very edge. They are very very tiny, definitely not cold sores. I've seen some things about Forcyde spots, but everything describes those as 1-3mm in size and these are even smaller than that. Everything I read says to ignore forcyde spots, but these are very uncomfortable. my lips feel dry no matter how much stuff I put on them, and they feel scaly because of all the teeny tiny bumps. I used to have problems with seborrheic dermatitis around my nose when I was a kid so the only other thing I can think of is that. Is there something else they could be? If they are forcyde spots, is there a way to make my lips feel moist again? I don't care about the appearance, but they are very uncomfortable.

Hey There! (This will be a long post - bear with me, might be helpful!)

I've had lots of experience with this.
Now it's important to cover all the bases, because there are of course more going to be different causes out there, so look at possibility of bacterial infection (old chap stick tubes, etc.) and HPV. It's important to be responsible and you don't want to spread it around if one of those is the causing it. You probably also want to look at the possibility of eczema (which can be caused by allergies) or heat rash (which can be aggravated by body chemistry, especially when going through hormonal changes), among many other possibilities!
Just to cover a few thing regarding chemical additives. Saccharine is not cancer causing in humans. See Wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Saccharin
However I am not a fan of additives to begin with (such as BHT, which can be found in lip gloss and cereal bags - it is a preservative and people are commonly allergic). This is a great site: http://www.cosmeticsdatabase.com/

I get these bumps from allergic reactions - and not just from the same allergy either. Have tried many different brands and varieties of chap sticks over many years. Sometimes it's a contact allergy - such as Mica or Titanium added for shimmer, sometimes I don't even know. I've tried natural chap sticks with no success, and even making it myself with ingredients that I use elsewhere on my body (olive oil, jojoba oil...) and my lips still react! And If i run into any of the foods that I'm allergic to by mistake, my lips often react first. I also react if there's any SPF. Ironically, the one I keep ending up with that doesn't bother me is ChapStick Mint, parabens and all. ***Note: In Canada, the plain "Mint" has different ingredients than the Peppermint and Spearmint available in the US. Also, as a chapstick addict, mine never has a chance to get old - I go though it in just over two weeks. And I'm a neat freak, so I wipe down the lid and neck regularly.***
The other things that have caused it for me are changes in seasons (summer/winter particularly) and humidity level. And I always get them after getting chapped lips too :(
A note about allergies: First of all, you can develop or "get over" any allergy, at any point in your life, after the first exposure. If you are going to react, your body needs at least a first exposure (when you will not react) in order to develop the antibodies that will cause an allergic response after a subsequent exposure. A reaction can occur right away or can happen up to three days later, possibly longer. And sometimes you can react to the same allergen in a different way! All thanks to a hypersensitive immune system. Ain't our bodies grand? This goes for contact and internal allergies.
If you are a highly reactive person, there is an "Elimination Diet" out there that can help you identify foods you may reacting to. I will however mention that milk, soy and wheat products are some of the most common allergies. The skin-***** test is pretty much useless for food allergies - it only tests for a small amount of very common allergens. See a nutritionist instead, or there is a very thorough (and expensive) blood-test available through naturopaths (at least in Canada).

A couple things that are often overlooked:
- Other products you come in contact with: Your laundry detergent! Your face is on the pillow every night - is it allergy-friendly? Products your partner might be wearing - Their lip gloss? Concealer? After shave? Cologne? Shampoo? Laundry detergent? Facial cleanser? Let them know what's happening if they aren't already aware. This list applies to yourself as well. Change products or avoid them for a few days and see how you do, then reintroduce them one by one, at LEAST one day apart in between to give your body a chance to rest.
- Environmental: Mold in the windowsills, Mildew in last years rain jacket, Pet dander or even their food or pet bedding.
- Unconscious habits, such as biting your nails. Do you do it, say, on the bus? Do you try to cut and wash your nails regularly? Or maybe you're a face toucher. I know I am - Brushing stray hairs out of my face, scratching an itch, etc. I have learned to become aware of this habit over the years, and am careful not to indulge unless my hands are clean and I'm at home.

I've tried to cover several possible factors here, and how they might combine to contribute to a reaction. The message behind it all is MINDFULNESS: Be conscious of the world around, how it affects you, and how you interact with that environment.

Ok, treatment (finally!). This is what works for me at least: Exfoliating, and letting my lips dry. Then I use Marigold (Calendula) salve - it's only got beeswax, oil, and marigold in it. Healing and soothing. Or Vaseline, just to keep the moisture in (but even these I can't use for long periods of time regularly!). You can use a chamomile tea bag to help soothe if you don't have access to marigold. If it's bad, sometimes I have to do this for two or three days in a row. But then it will dry out, peel, and my lips will be fine after with no sign of ever having had a problem.

And a few thoughts on things a doctor might prescribe: Topical steroids (cortisone) might help initially, but long-term steroid use will thin the skin and make it more vulnerable. Antibiotics (internally) will kill your intestinal flora as well, as make sure to take a pro-biotic (such as acidophillus, or eating pro-biotic yogurt) to counteract this effect or it will lower your natural defenses.

Again, apologies for the length. Hope this helps and/or gives you a few ideas to look in to. Remember that the cause can and will be different for everyone! You need to explore all the possibilities. Best of luck to you all!!!

Out of the blue, I too had swollen, itchy, burning, cracked dry lips with little bumps (blisters) and thought it was an allergy to my lip gloss or even Poison Oak for 3 months, it was driving me crazy and I could barely eat it was so painful...finally went to the doctor who gave me a Prednisone Creme which helped but didn't entirely fix the problem...3 more months of problems and I had a dental appt. for a cleaning, my dentist said it might have been an auto immune problem and gave me an RX for Fluocinonide cream...OMG this cream is not cheap but THIS cream was magic, it took about 4 days and my lips are back to normal...it's been 2 weeks so far and all is good!

I don't know if anyone needs this anymore but I had tiny little bumps on the bottom of my lower lip and the top of my upper lip. The cause for my bumps was a allergic reaction to a lip treatment I was using, however I didn't experience any itching throughout the time I had them. My resolution was applying rubbing alcohol with a q-tip and then applying hydrocortisone cream on my affected areas and when needed I would apply aquaphor. I repeated this process for two days and when I would rub my lips together I had that same sandpaper-y feeling but it felt more loose in a way and that was when I knew to rub it off. To remove them I just got a warm towel and firmly massaged it over my lips until they were gone. Hope this helps someone <3

Hey guys! I remember coming to this forum when I was dealing with these bumps. And for some people reading this, I may have the answer!!!

My bumps started as tiny sandpaper like bumps, usually lined up in a pretty orderly fashion near the borders of my lips. They weren't visible to people whenever I'd try to point them out and they were flesh colored. I hated when I'd feel them show up because I knew what else was coming...my lips would get swollen, usually my upper lip much more than the bottom one. Then my lips would start to "weep" fluid and this was my least favorite part. It's like my lips were sweating. Anytime I'd move them, I felt it seep this liquid. Eventually my lips could crust over.

It was definitely not cold sores as I was tested AND my doctor said it was not cold sores nor w as it impetigo. She told me I was having an allergic reaction. I rolled my eyes because I didn't think it was true because of how it progressed. It seemed like an infection. HOWEVER, one time it happened again and I decided to think "well what if it is an allergy?" and I wracked my brain thinking of what I could have eaten or put near my lips. Mango came to mind as I'd had it recently. Then I remembered that as a child, I had an allergy to mango. But since then, I'd been able to tolerate mango pretty well with no visible issues that I knew of. I looked up mango allergy and lo and behold, there's a condition called "mango mouth" which described my symptoms exactly. It's a type of contact dermatitis. I was incredulous. My allergy had come back. It can happen, y'all!!

Mango peel contains a chemical called urushiol - the same chemical found in poison ivy. Some people react poorly to it and some don't. FYI cashew shells also contain urusiol but most of the time they are processed in ways to ensure people don't come in contact with it. However -- after eating cashew a few weeks after finding this out, I had the reaction again. The allergic reaction can build in the body and show up a couple days or 24 hours after interaction with something so it can be hard to identify what it was that caused it. And that also explains why the symptoms got worse halfway through the reaction.

So it's likely some of you are experiencing contact dermatitis to either mango or something else your body isn't tolerating. Hope this helps someone!!

I have a similar problem as well and I have to know what it is and is it contagious. The bumps are extremely tiny, secrete a clear fluid, painless, the same color as my skin, and spread across my top lip over a period of days. My dermatologist could not identify them and told me to keep my lips moist with vaseline or vitamin E or something. Sometimes I put alcohol on it and then moisturize it but they keep coming back every 2 months or so. I'm more concerned with what is its and is it contagious because I live with a special needs child with a very low immune system.

Yes, I have noticed the same thing two days ago I have noticed I had got some very tiny bumps on my lips and they were like together like patch or group on my right side of my upper lip. I started to panicking and I didn't know what to do. I don't know what it is or how I got it but I'm very scared. I told my mom but she said she don't see it because it is very hard to see. Yes it's that tiny , very tiny. I told my mom I need to see the doctor about it. I'm just very scared and don't know what to do. Please if you are reading this please let me know if you know what it is and how can it go away please. I really hope it's nothing serious.

I am still not sure what these are but this is what I did to get rid of them. Allow your lips to dry out, stop using chapstick and avoid licking your lips. I also cleansed my lips with soap and warm water once or twice a day. Stay hydrated to avoid any cracks or bleeding. It may be a bit uncomfortable but this did work for me. After about a day of no chapstick and no licking my lips the bumps crusted over a bit (still not visible though so no worries there) and they did not feel as sensitive anymore. A day or two later, while still keeping my lips dry, the bumps are pretty much gone. I am keeping my lips dry for another day or two to be on the safe side but it seems like using chapstick makes them spread and drying them out makes them scab over and heal. At least that is what it seemed like with my lips. Hope that helps!

ITS IN THE MANGOS! If you have any extra sensitivities to Poison Ivy or possibly other such plants, Mango skins have similar biological properties to them.
The mango fruit, fortunately, does not so it is safe to eat after a good peel and wash, but the skins should be handled with caution.
I discovered this odd connection after my first lip reaction to eating a mango right off the skin. As a child, I had an extreme sensitivity to Poison Ivy where I couldn't be near the stuff on a breezy day without breaking out in rashes. That's no longer the case, but the sensitivity has remained in other aspects like this.
After the first reaction, I now get reoccurrences once or twice a year. I've narrowed down my triggers to be certain weather conditions, or spicy foods.
Some chapsticks with mango flavoring cause this reaction to occur probably by how they produce the flavor. EOS and Burt's Bees are the two main culprits that have the most problems keeping the specific chemical out of their chapsticks. Batches not mango flavored have probably gotten contaminated in some form. This is mere speculation from my own experiences and research so please don't take my thoughts to heart.

Thank you so much! I went to go read the back of my chapstick (Hempz Pure Herbal Extracts) that I’ve been using for the past week and sure enough ”Mangifera Indica (Mango) Fruit Extract”. Once I thought back on the lipchaps I’ve used it all made sense to what your saying! When I first used EOS I instantly broke out the next morning and Burt’s bees took about a week to break me out!

For everybody suffering from this if u already haven't its time to start narrowing down wat it culd b at least. So i wuld say go to the dr. n get a herpes test. If they *** nk negative thn at least u dont have to worry bout that. But if u do thn it culd possibly b herpes. Im 1 that hsv1 antibodies so ig i assume i have it but never get the full on classic symptoms. N the small bumps we all r tlkin bout i dont believe is herpes cus they never leak fluid or crust over. But start with that and go from there to relieve the sress cus ik how it can b not knowin

Hi guys its realy nice to see so manybofbu sharing your experiences.
I am not a medical practitioner but would like to share my experience too.
I was facing similar issue for almost 2-3 months. But 2 days back after reading all ur experiences I took it a bit seriously. The next day moring I cleared the problematic area n saw a tiny vertical cut like strech marks on the either sides of my lips that r continuously oozing some pus like sack that is deposits over my upper lip creating a flaks.
So I decided to apply Neomycin and Polymyxin powder (sold as Neosporin in my country) also I applied Fusidic Acid Cream (my doctor gave me some time back as antibiotic of wounds).
I kept applying both of these together almost 4-5 times n specially at night before sleep.
Believe me this made wonder for me today its almost 1.5 day latter I felt that flaky problem is almost gone n the crack is almost completely healed.
I usually don't write on such websites but being a victim I felt how much trouble it is to hv any such problem.
So please if anyone of u having a similar problem can try what I tried.

And yes its not an expensive drug in my country way more cheaper than the medical examination n Dr. Prescription fee.

Thanks for reading
I wish a sound health to everyone!

I second what Adobelover said about the Fluocinonide cream. I had the bumps as well but I think I've found the answer too:

The bumps appeared around the end of September. My top lip felt like I had sandpaper on it and the skin on my bottom lip got really dry and even darkened a few shades. My lips were SO dry. The bumps were really bad on the vermilion line of my lips. They didn't itch but they did begin to sting, especially once I tried treatments.

I used jojoba oil, coconut oil, neosporin, vaseline, aquaphor, neosporin overnight healing lip balm, alcohol, apple cider vinegar, even this stuff I ordered from overseas called Anti-Sebum. I tried everything I could possibly try. They were really bad in October and then finally went away for about a week and then came back again.

The second time they came back I went to the pharmacy and asked what they thought it was. The pharmacist said it was fever blisters (which I knew it wasn't) but I went ahead and bought the Abreeva anyway. It actually helped a bit. The bumps on the vermilion line of my lips were almost like burns: they stung when I put stuff on them but after a day or so they would kind of scab over...only they never completely healed. Once the scab came off it'd start all over again. The Abreeva did help the scab to form/semi-heal faster, so that was good.

The bumps went away again at the beginning of December but somewhat came back again, only much milder. I used the Abreeva again and they went away after about a week and a half.

I visited home for Christmas. While I was there I showed my mom what was going on. I still had a few tiny bumps from my last breakout. She gave me this cream she got from my aunt and told me to use it. My aunt has eczema and this cream is what her doctor prescribed for her. It's called Fluocinonide. It's a steroid cream that relieves itching, pain and swelling.

I used it and noticed a different the next day. The tiny bumps were gone. I tried not to get too excited simply because I knew they were already fading before I used the cream. My mother had a spare tube and gave it to me to take home. Well within a few days of getting home, I felt those damn little bumps again. Within a day I could see that they'd returned completely (though the open sore part on my lips didn't return, thank goodness). I used the cream two or three times that night.

When I woke up the next morning the spots had dried out completely, to the point I was able to gently buff them off of my lip. I was ecstatic! I think I finally found something that works!

The damage to my lips seems to be irreversible though. Due to the open bumps on the vermilion line of my lips, that area is now lighter than the rest of my lips. I can draw it in with a lip liner but it does look a little weird sometimes. Still, I'm just grateful the bumps appear to have gone away.

The Fluocinonide cream does require a prescription (FYI) so if you want to try it you will likely need a doctor. But so far it appears as though it works. If the bumps come back I will use the cream again and update you on the results.

Hopefully this will help someone. Those bumps made things so difficult for me. For someone who already suffers with self-image issues, having that on my face really stressed me out. I sincerely hope I've found the answer and that this will help someone out there who is struggling with the same thing.

I think the tiny (yellowish?) bumps on the upper lip are the body's way of healing itself, kind of like the same process of creating a scab. In my case, the tiny bumps only come along after I've had red and irritated lips first. When healing, the bumps go away first and then the redness. I use the cocoa butter vasellie and it works wonders!

I was having this same problem, and was so freaked out because notning I was doing would help! I started putting Vaseline on my lips, and Neosporin on my outer lips where the bumps were. I did this about 2-3 times a day, and it made my lips feel so much better and cleared it up within a week! I hope this can help someone with the same problems!

Wow I have the same problem! I have tiny bumps on my lips and its super dry and unconfortable. The bumps and irritation also extends to the corner of my lips. And even the roof of my mouth is dry and rough. I have no idea what it is. I have been eating mangoes for the past few days. Could that be it? I love Mangoes! I hope not! I bite the skin off the Mangoe so maybe the skin had bacteria on it or pesticide? I have no clue. But I would love an answer. When the bumps first form Ive been treating it with tea tree oil and a carrier oil. It helps the bumps go away. But it still leaves my lips scaly and rough so I use neosporin and it clears up in a week or 2 at most. This has happened to me 2 times before this present incident .
I'm having the same bumps issue. Started a few days ago and I JUST started adding mango to my smoothies! Maybe it IS that!
Mango skins have a biological similarity to poison ivy, so if you have a heightened sensitivity to poison ivy, you're probably going to react to the mango skin. Fortunately, I've read that the fruit itself is safe as long as it's washed after peeling so you don't come into contact with the chemical.
I developed these little bumps after eating some mango slices and made the connection. I used have an extreme sensitivity to Poison Ivy as a child where I couldn't even walk past the stuff if there was a breeze or I'd get rashes. Thankfully, that's no longer the case, but the sensitivity is still there.
Ever since I first got them, they come back once or twice a year, even if I haven't touched a mango. I've narrowed it down to weather conditions, and certain spicy foods that may trigger reactions now.

I have 6 tiny little bumps on my upper lip too. They look like a little liquid are in them (kinda if you held a pen in your hand for too long, a little water bubble appears). I think it's cause I used a bad chapstick since it was fine this morning?? I'm usually really bad and pick my lips/skin, so I'm hands off it now. Gonna go wash with soap and use a different chapstick and hope it goes away soon.

I had the same problem with my lips. They were rashy tiny bumps that made me feel uncomfortable. I used desitin maximum strength original paste with 40% zinc oxide. I applied desitin to my lips when I got home that day for a couple of hours. I showered and reapplied it and went to sleep. The next day I applied Vaseline throughout the day to keep my lips from cracking or drying up. I stopped using random chap sticks for moisture and just used the Vaseline. By the time I got home again that day day my lips were 95% healed and almost completely smooth. I will apply desitin again before I sleep tonight. I hope it will be 100% healed tomorrow morning. Im sure it will be. Using the combination of desitin and Vaseline gave me fast results. The only problem with using desitin was that it was difficult to remove from my lips. I used a towel and warm water to remove it. I was also very gentle. I hope this helps. It definitely helped me quickly.

Okay, I am having the same reaction, so I figured I was allergic to acid foods. Everything that you have in your post is happening to me. The itching, swelling and the condition actually burned my lips. My lips was brittle like a Brillo pad, so I used lip bum and Shea butter for moisture because of the dryness. I did not have blisters, but it was like inner fever escaping my body, all around my mouth, very red. Do anyone know what this is? I have had cradle skin year ago, which was strange for my age, but adults get it also.

I have the same problem you do. Little skin colored bumps on my lip line. I can pop them like blackheads almost and they go away for a day, but they always come back. I'v seen 3 different doctors and they assure me that it can't be herpes, but they have no idea what it is. I wish I knew what is was and had a cure, because I would shout it from the rooftops. If you find out what it is let me know and I will tell you if I do.

I had this same exact problem. Itchy tiny bumps on and around my lips and it makes your lips feel dry. Mine weren't very visible but when I licked my lips, they felt like sandpaper. I went to the dermatologist and she told me to stop using all the different chapsticks that I was and just use Vaseline. Then she prescribed me Desonide ointment which you apply two times a day, five times a week. I did this and in the first week, my lips were nice and smooth again! Hope this helps!

My lips usually itch, swell, and then the bumps present themselves. They are the same color as my lips/ slightly more red. They come and go. I don't eat mangoes, can't say that I ever have. I live in a Michigan and the bumps only began to appear when the weather got colder. Unfortunately, I have to blame this significantly old flavored lip gloss from b&bw. That's when they first appeared, I didn't think it was the gloss but the more I used it, the worst the bumps got. I put my chap stick (Lypsol- also a great product) over it to help and because I didn't wash my lips first, the gloss transferred to my chopstick and made it bad too. I washed my lips and use neosporin and that helps. But now when I use any other gloss like the previous the same thing happens again. So it's neosporin for me.
