Fungal infection or tinea versicolor is diagnosed through physical examination and if there is any doubt, skin scrapings from the infected area may be obtained and viewed under the microscope to show the fungus responsible..
On the other hand, the diagnosis of vitiligo is also made based on a physical examination, medical history, and a small sample of the affected skin to be examined also under the microscope. In vitiligo, the skin sample will usually show a complete absence of pigment-producing melanocytes. Important factors in the diagnosis include a family history of vitiligo; a rash, sunburn, or other skin trauma at the site of vitiligo 2 to 3 months before depigmentation started; stress or physical illness; and premature (before age 35) graying of the hair.
Either way, it is important that you see your doctor for further evaluation and management. I hope this helps. Take care and regards.
