why biopsy birthmarks?

Why would a dermatologist biopsy a birthmark that has been unchanged since birth?

This discussion is related to Doctor removed moles without biopsy.

No dermatologist does a biopsy without a reason.  If yours felt there was a possibility of a problem, he or she decided to be super cautious.

Don't sweat it.  I would far rather have a dermatologist pay attention to growths or a birthmark, than to ignore.

MEDICAL PROFESSIONAL
Hello
For any mark or birth mark, it is important to check out for any skin malignancy. If you notice changes in the mole's/mark’s color, height, size or shape, you should have a dermatologist evaluate it. You also should have it checked and get it biopsied if it bleeds, oozes, itches, appear scaly, or become tender or painful. Otherwise it should be left as such.

It is very difficult to precisely confirm a diagnosis without examination and investigations and the answer is based on the medical information provided. For exact diagnosis, you are requested to consult your doctor. I sincerely hope that helps. Take care and please do keep me posted on how you are doing.
