will I ever be able to go in a swimming pool?

by mangocheer, May 04, 2008 12:21PM
Ever since I hit puberty I have gotten a rash any time I have been in pool chemicals. It does not show much on the skin, maybe redness and small bumps, but it causes a lot of  burning pain, discomfort, itching and it causes my entire body to be hot and makes me miserable. and it lasts for a week whether I use anti itch creams, aloe or any remedy or not. It is so bad that I have never been able to go into pools, waterparks, hot tubs, or even amusement parks which splash water on you. It happens weather the pool/park claims to use chlorine, bromine, boquasil or whatever. I went to a dermatologist once when I was fifteen (i'm now 27) and he said anyone would have this reaction if exposed to too much chlorine so I must just have really sensitive skin. But I think that is a silly answer because my skin has never had a reaction to any lotions, cleaning products, make-up, etc. My skin does not break out to anything except for pool chemicals.I read on your anwer to someone else's post that you have never had to tell someone they have to give up swimming. I have not been able to use a pool, hot tub or waterpark since i was eleven years old. Is there any hope?

hi,

there is always hope. you may not have had any allergies, but that dont mean you will not get one ever. you may get one anytime in your life as the immune system may be reactive to any substance and that causes allergies.

nevertheless, try to find out what is the cause is the cause of this trouble. This will tell you what you may need to do. there may also be the need to take a bath before you enter the swimming pool. that is a majr cause of such reactions.

after the allergen has been identified, a remission plan may be taken up.

You may have to consult an allergist to discuss this better.

keep us posted and let us know if yoy may have any other queries.

best regards
