yeast infection follow up on previous question re.redness on scrotum and penis

by DELLMAN, Feb 23, 2003 12:00AM
Doc, I am a bit confused are talking about jock itch here as my  condition does not present like jock itch ie.raised borders and rash on the inner thighs. How does a male get the yeast infection you referred to? Also you suggested I see a dermatologist as opposed to a urologist...ok but will I need an antibiotic to handle the infection presumably in my urinary tract and will a dermatoligist prescribe this. Also would  a yeast or fungal infection present as rather bright red areas on the scrotum and the forskin and upper penis skin under the forskin.
Sorry, I don't mean to question your potiential diagnosis, but I'm a bit paranoid...

Your confusion is understandable.  "Fungus" and "yeast" are not the same thing.  Fungus ("jock itch") indeed causes inner-thigh brown rashes.  Yeast causes intense redness, often on the scrotum and penis.  Clotrimazole is effective against both fungus and yeast.

As I mentioned, yeasts live in the GI tract, and most men don't seem to catch them from anyone else--the infections just happen.  However, they're easy to get rid of.

Hope this clarifies.

If there is a brown rash on your inner thighs is it serious? what would one do, see a doctor? is there over the counter medicine for this?
