Friend smells a sweet odor

by techfan, Mar 11, 2009 09:53AM
I have a friend who complains of smelling a faint sweet odor at the end of each respiratory cycle.  He describes it as an odor that emits from an air purification system.  Could this be the ketone odor of diabetes?  He has never been diagnosed with diabetes, but denies being screened either.

A fruity odor to the breath occurs as the body attempts to get rid of excess acetone through the breathing. This is a sign of ketoacidosis, which may occur in diabetes. It is a potentially life-threatening condition.
