Glycomet - safe during pregnancy?

Hi All,

My wife is 28 years old and has type diabetes for the past 1.5 years. She has family history of diabetes. Her glucose and hemoglobin A1c are under control. We are planing for a baby and consulted an endocrinologist about it. He has recommended that she take tablet Glycomet 250 mg  (one tablet each day).
He indicated that she continue taking Glycomet until she conceives and it does not affect the fetus even if she has conceived and takes the tablet for a few days and then shift to insulin once it is confirmed that she has conceived.

I have complete faith in his suggestion, but I just want to 100% sure about this, so please suggest if we are on the right track?

Hi,

I can't comment on the glucomet, but you could ask a pharmacist if you wanted to be sure about the use of this drug when trying to conceive.  

As her glucose and HA1c are under control, things are looking good for you both.  As your doc said it is normal to switch to insulin during pregnancy.....

Just keep everything under control and your wife and your planned baby will be fine.

Glycomet is the generic term for Metformin (Glucophage). I just picked up my Metformin RX yesterday. It comes with a pharmaceutical paper that explains in detail everything one needs to know about the drug. This is what the attached pharmaceutical paper had to say about pregnancies:

"Teratogenic Effects: Pregnancy Category 8
Most experts recommend that insulin be used during pregnancy to maintain blood glucose levels as close to normal as possible. Because animal reproduction studies are not always predictive of human response, metformin should not be used during pregnancy unless clearly needed.

There are no adequate and well-controled studies in pregnant women with metformin.

Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant. Metformin may not be right for you. Talk with your doctor about your choices. You should also discuss your choices with your doctor if you are nursing a child."
