I am on my third week of taking Victoza. I took a .6 dose for 1 week, a 1.2 dose for one week and am now on my sixth day of a 1.8 doseage. The first couple of days of each dose change are a little rough. I have a nauseous feeling in my stomach, but NO vomiting. My endocrinologist says that eating too large of a portion and too often is the problem. By the time I moved to 1.8, I have figured out he was correct.

I have lost about 10 lb in these three weeks with my reduced appetite. I still find I need to eat regularly, at the same times, but can feel satisfied with  just a few bites. My suggestion is to never eat until you feel full on this med, or you will feel nauseous.

I have been on victoza for 3 months, it works wonders as appetite suppressant and I do have to force my self to eat all my meals. I adhere to a strict low carb hi protien diet with mini meals and snacks in between, I have excellent glucose control. most importantly I have lost weight 30 lbs in 5 months due to combination of carb counting, mini meals, exercise and a medication that has had minimal side effects.  I noticed significant weight loss with Paula Dean but that was before I knew she too was on Victoza. I encourage you to try for at least three months of the medication before you turn it down. I too take lisinopril because it is imperative that you protect your kidneys before they are damaged. Good luck

I have been taking Victoza since May. At first I noticed very occasional nausea, not any more. I have lost just over 3 stone in weight, I found it lessened my appetite. I have had no adverse side affects. My weight was 19 1/2 stone, it is now under 16 and I feel hugely better in every way. I don't need to take so much Metformin, more energy and  better all round health.

October 10, 2012

I just wanted to make a comment, my husband went on Victoza about a year ago.  The only nausea he experienced was due to when he would over eat.  Currently he has lost about 60 pounds.  He has more energy than I can keep up with and his blood sugar is better than its ever been before.  He has even found that he can enjoy a little sugar without getting sick.

I had metabolic syndrome/PCOS?insulin resistance and I used HCG for weightloss for nearly 2 years. I cheated a bit but lost 40 kg (I think that is about 80 pounds). I had previously been a total exercise fanatic trying to keep my weight down. I would sometime swim 2 - 6 km a day, but my weight did not budge. I was still about 110 kgs! I had recently become a born again believer in Jesus Christ and my husband and I prayed into this issue big time. I read a book called The Bondage Breaker by Neil Anderson, and the Lord healed my hypothyroid condition, but my weight did not budge. We were then led to a local program here in South Africa, based on Dr Simeons protocol, which started with a glorious fat fast and then a detox. A very low carb diet followed. What I had a hard time with was breaking the habit of snacking.I am a bit ADD and like to keep my jaws moving if I sit still! I found a sucralose based gum at Woolworths and now knit or play Suduko on my phone if  I watch a DVD. It all helps. What I realized is that I was eating way more than I needed because eating less had not shifted my weight significantly, and so I was in a bit of a 'why bother' state of mind, but still exercising like a nut. Was this slow metabolism because of my anorexia and bulemia as a teenager? Maybe. I don't know. What I do know, is that if the Lord had healed me in one instant, I would still be living on a high-fat, high sugar diet and setting this bad example or my kids. When I came off the hcg last year this time, My weight was about 70 kg (?140 pounds). Still higher than I would have liked, but still good. I stopped because of irregular menstrual bleeding and what I hated was that the doctors who recommend this protocol are never honest about what they are exactly giving you. It is like a big state secret or something. They never ever gave Simeon credit either. Maybe it is an issue about who is getting the biggest slice of the pie, but I still believe that doctors must be on the level with their patients. You have a right to know how much of what you are taking, and in what combinations. The formula they were using here was a combination of Vitamin B, HCG and lipostabil, which they would change around according to the rate of weight loss. The bizarre part is that I never lifted a finger to exercise AT ALL during those two years, and I looked fantastic. Then, after I came off it, I panicked and started exercising again, swimming and hiking up a mountain close to my house.I kept my low carb, mainly protein and veg diet, but did sneak the odd Oreo Mcflurry from McDonalds. I found my tolerance to those things I previously ate was much better, and that cheating every other day and not every day definitely helped. I went to the Gynae at the beginning of the year to find I had only one large cyst on my ovary. I went away on a two month holiday, and during a run down a mountain it burst and drained away. When I got back, I went back to the gynae to find the big cyst gone, but the PCO was returning. Subsequently, I have gained some of the weight back, despite a rigorous exercise program. Professor Tim Noakes, has recently written a book about his phenomena and insulin resistance. I then broke my leg on one of my mountain hikes and have been sitting around eating badly for 4 weeks, which is not helping. Hence my research into Victosa. What I can identify from all these extremely helpful blogs, is that low refined carbs help, along with reducing intake of very sugary fruits and veggies. Where meds like hcg help,is that they enable weightloss WITHOUT exercise. It also helps repair membranes whereas Victosa is just going directly into the cell to effect it's actions. Hcg is a nautral pregnancy hormone precursor, and the greatest favour any overweight pregnant woman could do for herself, it to follow a low refined carb diet during pregnancy (read Simeons diet protocol fro more info - availabe if you Google it), to force stored fat to be used up and to avoid post-pregnancy weight gain, which is where many women, including myself, didn't know or understand and thus got stuck with huge post pregnancy weight issues. What also can play a role with weight gain, are allergy issues. I have personally worked out that wheat is bad news for me, and  is possibly due to the childhood vaccine program I underwent before people realized that the vaccines cause autism and disable the immune system. Can't undo it, but can learn to live without wheat. Red Pill Reich has good probiotic diet protocols to help people with IBS and vaccine damage. It annoys me however, that 'medicine' has caused this disorder in my body and now I have to rely on 'medicine' to live. Cash cows we indeed are. I am still praying into these issues, because I can see how immensely the people on this blog are suffering, how they are at the mercy of their doctors prescriptions, and desperate for hope. For the record, I have a masters degree in alternative medicine. I was a practicing homeopath until the Lord revealed to me what I was actually involved with - witchcraft and hindusim, which I am currently writing a book about. It seems to me the only available options people have to help them are these: 1) Put their faith and trust in doctors ( what are their motives and who is paying them dividends); 2) Put their faith in alternative medicine (herbs are fine, homeopathics are not as there is a spiritual bondage that goes with it) or 3) Put their faith in Jesus Christ (who, it is written, is the LORD that healeth thee, and who took stripes so that you would not have to suffer under the regime of Nazi based, satanic medicine). I chose option 3, and the Lord has restored many aspects of my life and soul in ways that are too incredible to write about here. He even restored my marriage of nearly 19 years, when there was a time when I actually hated my husband. And I mean RESTORED and healed. With regards to my current weight woes, should I dare even complain when I am loading up on peppermint crisp tart? My blood sugar and BP are totally stable. I should also mention that L carnitine is great for weightloss BUT because it requires water to facilitate the fat burning effect, you have to stay WELL hydrated or your BP will go up due to dehydration - so caution if you are taking metformin or glucophage as you do not want to cause a crisis (read the package insert for more info). What amazes me, is that in my faithful authorized King James, I have read in the Old testament, how the Lord, revealed to His people the Israelites, that they should not eat the FAT of the animals. He gave them other basic instructions thousands of years ago, that that have been proven by modern, scientific research to be true and useful. Like don't eat aimal fat, handwashing before you eat, and quarantining the sick. Amazing. Neil's book helped me address a lot of the things that I had done wrong in my life and get honest with the LORD. Whether or not, the Lord heals anyone overnight is between you and Him.What I can tell you is that t is not an exercise in self -effort. I have had Him heal my kids of fevers, urinary tract infections, flus, and other things in a matter of hours. What I did do in those cases, was surrender completely to Him and entirely acknowledge that I could not do and the doctors could not do what I was now asking Him to do.  Will continue on next post...

On one occasion, when I was still practicing as a homoeopath, I had to take my son to a local hospital to receive conventional medicine for an intensive allergic reaction that I was not able to heal (not surprisingly because humans can't heal anything). While I was in the Emergency room, I could hear a child crying.  a raspy, abnormal cry. I asked the sister on duty what was wrong. She told me the boy had been found hanging on a washing line by his parents. He had been playing, got caught in it, and was hanging for about 15 minutes. I replied to her that he should be able to be resuscitated, because he was breathing and crying. Her reply was a rather angry one. "Yes! But he is not going to be ok, can't you hear his cry is not normal!" Her belief in a fatalistic outcome made me call out on the name of the Lord Jesus in total defiance of her attitude. I prayad and said to the Lord,"Please, have mercy. The parents of this boy will not be able to survive this, it will destroy them. Please have mercy, either take him home to you or restore him". I prayed like this for about 3 minutes, then the crying suddenly stopped. While I was praying the nurse was shaking her head at me, like I was crazy. I ignored her. We left soon after. I called a paediatrician who worked there the next day, and enquired after the boy. "Well!" he said, "it was the darndest thing. He just stopped crying and came out of it. He will have a little residual weakness on his left side, but physio should sort that out". There you have it. JESUS HEALS! What then filtered through my own mind was, if Jesus can heal like this, why am I practicing as a homoeopath? What is the point if JESUS heals! What the hell am I doing? It was still a while before He puled me out of the profession though, because I am stubborn, but the answer for people is thus, quite obviously, Jesus, not any kind of medicine.  Questions I am asking myself now are: Is my relatively small weight gain NOW just a matter of discipline and returning to a low carb diet; do I need to get back on hcg to bring the PCO back under control AND follow a low carb, cheat every now and then diet? I'll pray into these things and pray for us all because I know the Lord ever intended His children to suffer like some of you are. I am so ashamed of my own lack of discipline reading how many meds some people on this blog are on, and how their issues are serious and life threatening, like mine were. It's like the Lord pointing out to me how far I have come and how I have been griping about small issues instead of simply bringing my appetite back under my control, like Paul had to. Thank-you everyone for being so open and honest

I also had an issue with an increase in blood pressure and heart rate while on Victoza.  The weight loss aspect was great but my heart rate increased from 65 bpm to 90 bpm.  After stopping the Victoza, my heart rate was back to 65 bpm within two days.

Does anyone know the percentage of pancreatic and thyroid CA using victoza? I'm just starting the drug and I'm on metformin also. I don't feel good, but after reading everyone's post I will stick with it! This is such a great site. It's nice to hear from normal people. Just worried about the CA.

I've been taking Victoza since the first week in June of this year.  I had already been on Metformin ER 1000 mg twice daily, but bad eating habits had put a lot of weight on me again.  When I started the Victoza I also began eating properly again, as well.  I went for my first follow-up visit two weeks after starting Victoza and had lost 10 pounds.  At one month from the start, I had lost 20 pounds.  I went for an additional 3 months follow-up and had lost a total of 40 pounds.

I don't attribute the entire loss to Victoza, but I can tell you for certain that it has definitely helped to curb my appetite.  As others have said, many times it comes time to eat a meal, and I just don't feel like I want to eat due to lack of hunger.  Not that temptations aren't still experienced, but sometimes just indulging in a small amount of a "treat" causes me to feel way too full, or just a tiny bit nauseous to the point of saying "enough".

Yes, after a quick start to weight loss you do hit plateaus, but that will happen with any weight loss.  The body readjusts over time, but weight loss will begin again.  Just be persistent!  I've hit them at least 3 times in this new journey, and I refuse to give up this time.  My goal is to eventually (as my physician calls it) "reverse" my type II diabetes, and perhaps eventually get off all medications.  On June 5, 2012, I weighed 280 lbs. (127 kg), and am now at 237 lbs (107.5 kg).  I'm tall at 5'10", but I acknowledge that this is still a long way to go to get to my goal of 180 lbs. (81.65 kg).

I consider this a wonder drug, and between proper eating (with the occasional indulgence), Metformin ER 2000 mg per day, and 1.2 mg Victoza, my HbA1c went from 9.8 to 6.1 in 4 months.  To anyone who gets discouraged about plateaus, I say keep up your hard work and it will pay off.

Keep the faith!

Victoza has been a blessing to my diabetes as well as weight-loss. I was struggling with weight issues while on a strict diet. I wasn't losing as well as I should have been. My appetite was working against my intake, until I was introduced to Victoza. I noticed a tremendous amount of inches and weight droppage in less than 2 weeks. Now, my body is getting sexier by the day. Although I'm fine, my exercise routine is minimal.

Lenda I have suffered with high BG levels for years too.  I started Victoza 10 days ago and my AM levels have dropped from high 200's- low 300's to 170's.  I also take the oral med Glimepride. I have a hunch that when your sugars are high for so long it takes the body a bit of time to respond to anything other than insulin.  I would try to continue with the Vicotza and see if maybe the MD can change the oral meds.

I'm in the same boat as you as far as working long shifts.  I work 12 hr night shifts and they're really taking a toll.  It's very difficult to have any consistency when you work so many hrs.  I think the right way to go about it is to start preparing your meals at home and taking them to work with you and to continue your exercise routine.  Maybe eat lunch at your desk and add a quick walk over your lunch hr.  My best to you and

I have been on Victoza for about two years now (1.2 /day). I had some weight loss (6'3", 270 lbs) at the beginning  but not much at first. In the last 6 months have lost about 10 lbs. The Victoza causes most foods to taste horrible. I can eat about half a meal before the poor taste kicks in and I just have to quit eating. My wife will ask what I want for dinner and I will tell her to fix what she wants and I will eat as much as I can. At the worst, my a1C was 9.2. It is now 7.6 and going down. As I've read these posts, I find a lot of different reaction to the Victoza, but it seems to work on the blood sugar and on the weight loss.

This may sound odd and I doubt there is any scientfic evidence of this - but I have spoken to friends who have been on byetta and theyfound if they injected into the abdomen rather than leg, etc they had less nausea.  I have been on Vicotza for almost 3 weeks.  Nausea is with me and some diarrhea.  I inject as soon as I get up and the side effects are livable.  Hope this helps!

I was diagnosed with Type II Diabetes in April of 2001. I have been on the Victoza Flex Pen for over a year. In the beginning I had nausea problems while my body was adjusting to the medicine. My doctor also put me on Victoza for Diabetes maintenance and weight loss. It has helped curb my appetite tremedously. I have lost about 27 pounds without changing my diet much. I have not developed any other health issues since taking the drug. In response to the other drug, I don't know anything about that particular one. However, your doctor was right to put you on a drug for kidney health. If you feel uncomfortable with taking the drug, there are other drugs such as zocor, lipitor, accuretic, and lotensin that keep your blood pressure under control and help support good kidney function.

I just started taking Victoza a few months ago.  I saw a big weightloss the first several weeks but when my doctor increased my dosage, the weightloss stopped, even though I'm watching my diet via Weight Watchers.  I haven't had any side effects at all, thankfully.  I will tell you, though, that the purpose of this medication is to keep food in your stomach longer so you don't get hungry as frequently.  Now, keep in mind that I am not a diabetic - I take this drug for another purpose, however I am hypoglycemic.  So in the past if I didn't eat every 4 hours, I would get a migraine, my hands would shake, I would sweat profusely and almost pass out.  Now, I don't ever feel that way and I've gone 6 hours without eating with no problem.  I like that aspect of the drug.

Do any of you drink alcohol or coffee? I have a glass or two of wine every night and 1 cup of coffee in the a.m.
I started Victoza 3 weeks ago. For the first 5 days I was on .6,then 6 days later I moved to 1.8.

I felt good.  I was not very hungry.  My only to side effects were constipation and insomnia.

I started first by taking it around 8 a.m. Then I moved to 10 a.m.  Then 4 p.m.  and finally to around 8:00 or 9:00p.m.

The first week I had no desire to eat much crap, only healthy foods.  And no desire at all for the the wine.

Then that starting dwindling.  Weekends are hard because  the family is here and things change.  During the week I can pretty much keep my own schedule.

I stopped taking the V last weekend because I did not want to mix it with alcohol.  My appetite came back full-fledged and MORE.

I want to go back on it. I am concerned about the the alcohol though.  I do like my wine every night and I do like my cocktails when I go out to dinner.

Can someone tell me how I can take it so that I don't want to desire the alcohol again?  I was doing great in that area the first 1.5 weeks.

I don't know how much I lost but my stomach was much flatter.  I probably lost 5 to 7 lbs.  though not sure.

Please enlighten.

Peace and love to all of you.

My doctor recently placed me on Victoza. i had been on synthroid after my thyroidectomy and lisinopril for my BP for many months and i continued to gain weight. Eventually this last september during a doctor visit, he got frustrated that i was not losing weight plus he believed my pancreas was tipping towards diabetes, that he placed me on Victoza, giving me my first dose in his office. the first week i had lightheadedness and nausea and could not eat, i felt horrible, later on i tapered the dose back down to 0.6mg on my own till my body got used to it and i slowly increased the dose every two weeks which worked better for me.  As of september 15 and today i have lost 25lb. i was initially 220lb and today i am 195lb. This is first time in 10 years that i am able to take off the weight.  However, the weight loss slowed down considerable in October, but that is because i had been off my synthroid for a while. once i went back on my synthroid, the weight is literally falling off of me.  Please stick with it. It works. Remember, you still have to eat a low carb diet and force yourself to eat at least two times a day, small meals with losts of water. if you don't do this, you will stop losing weight.
Good Luck!!

Well, i don't know what to tell you.... I am also a christian and I believe in healing. remember that jesus heals and also encourages us to find medical help when sick. your faith together with medicine works rather than faith without works or anything. That will actually be murder on yourself. Use wisdom, do not play with your thyroid to prevent future major complications.

I agree with you on the dietary intake. I have noticed that whenever i eat a heavy meal, i get tommy aches and one day i threw up badly.  The main thing is to eat less carbs and more protein/ seafood, fruits and veggies and victoza seems to love that type of diet. also increase your water intake and exercise. i walk 3 days a week and it is unbelievable how much weight i have lost. victoza is more effective when taking synthroid along with it, at least it does for me.

My Dr. prescribed Victoza to me last Dec (2011) for weight loss and to lower my sugar. I didn't like the idea of an injection but found it to be 99% painless especially while I still had a fat belly. My sugar #s stayed below 100 immediately and I completely lost my appitite. I used to eat out of enjoyment and was always ready for a slice of pizza, with Victoza I began to only eat out of necessity and was never hungry. I was losing maybe a lb or 2 there at the beginning but by August 2012 I had lost 30lbs. In Nov of 2011 I saw a TV ad about a lawyer looking for anyone that had taken Victoza and now had pancreatic cancer or pancreatic problems. I stopped taking Victoza because my mother died from pancreatic cancer. I asked several doctors and phamacists about it and none would comment and refererred me back to my family doctor. When I asked him about it he wouldn't commit either he just hummed and hawed. I guess this is a result of or sue happy culture so no one will give you an honest answer in fear of being sued if wrong. He told me to stop taking it if it was a concern. I really liked it and would like to continue, I have since gained back 10lbs. Hope to find an honest answer about its long term effects. Good Luck

I have been on Lisinopril HCTZ for a couple years and have NEVER suffered from any kind of cough with it. In fact, I've had zero negative side effects from it. Don't let a couple people who HAVE had a cough from it discourage you from at least TRYING it for its benefits. Good luck to you, whichever you decide.

I am a Type 2 diabetic and have been on Victoza for a year. I had previously taken off 134 pounds and kept it off by power walking 3 miles per day and working with free weights. I then stepped off of a ladder, twisted my leg, tore my meniscuses in my right knee and they were removed. That ended my walking of any kind, period. Weight began returning. When I first went on Victoza, I was on the lowest dose. The first few days I was slightly nauseated, but it faded. At the end of two weeks, rasht dose was doubled to the dose I have been on ever since. Again, I experienced a few days of nausea that faded and I have had no further problems. In that one year, I have lost close to 100 pounds. My last A1c, just this past week, was an incredible 5.4. My diabetes has never been better controlled. Of course, a great deal of that is getting my weight down to something approaching normal. For that, I still have about forty-five pounds to go. I would urge you to give Victoza a try. It has worked wonders for me.

I find that on Victoza, I eat whatever I want whenever I want it. It is the first time in my life I have NOT been on a diet. It is also the first time in my life that whatever part of the brain that normal people have that tells them they are full and have had enough has started to work in my brain. There have been a lot of "go boxes" that have left restaurants with me since I have been on this drug and sometimes I get two more meals from those boxes. There are days when I have actually forgotten to eat and have eaten some yogurt just so I could take my evening medications.

i'm on my second month on victoza. Used to be on byetta but that didn't seem to aid in weight loss and besides my insurance switched it to a tier 3 which would cost more money. My dr. switche me to victoza. started me off the lowest dose 0.6 for 4 days, then upped it to 1.2. i have seen great sugar levels. after a month, i lost 4lbs. i do exercise about 3 days a week as well and try to count calories. I didn't have as much nausea as i did when i first started byetta. it lasted a couple of days. I also take it in the mornings before or after breakfast. i noticed if i took it before breakfast and didn't eat with an hour, i got nauseas. I feel a lot better. My side effects is i'm brusing where i give the shots and experience some redness and itching.

weight went down and sugar level fell to 8.0 but then after the third week and on sugar level became same as before even though I go to gym every day and keep a very, very good diet with no gluten or carbs and I am not fat or overweight.

Many people have had success when just changing what they eat, without any drugs. The food pyramid, myplate, the suggestions of eating so many grains/carbs is just plain wrong. When you cut those out, you should see results pretty fast. I weighed 180 and got down to 170 in one month, just by keeping my carbs below a certain level. I ate chicken, cheese, veggies and fruit. No exercise. I didn't starve myself either. Please, go to marksdailyapple.com and read the info there. Go to youtube and look up smarter science of slim podcasts. They offer real info for being healthy and it's not as hard as many people think.

Time to find another doctor, one who isn't so involved in the drug companies incentive program's.  I have a article from webmd.

April 20, 2012 -- Public Citizen, the Washington, D.C.-based consumer advocacy group, is petitioning the FDA to immediately remove the type 2 diabetes drug Victoza (liraglutide) from the market. The petition claims that the injectable medication puts patients at risk of thyroid cancer, pancreatitis, serious allergic reactions, and kidney failure.

"More and more people are taking this drug, and more people are experiencing serious health problems as a result," Public Citizen director Sidney Wolfe, MD, said in a statement. "Clearly, the FDA's warning system is not sufficient. The drug should be taken off the market."

I've been on it for a year now -- in the beginning I had some nausea but managed to work my way through it, each day it got a little better.  Victoza has been awesome though -- I've lost around 35 pounds and my blood sugar levels have stabilized as well.  It's been great.

I lost over 25 pound using Victoza...The side effects where extreme nausea for about a month and redness and swelling at the injection site, loss of appetite. Then every thing got back to normal. As far as Lisonopil I was on that also but had to stop taking because the dry cough would not go away it lasted over 3 months. When I told my doctor she took me off .

ive recently started victoza, 2 weeks ago with not much nausea but a little dizziness in the first couple of days but lots of diarrhoea ,some days I feel fuller than others ,i also have irritable bowel syndrome, which has similar symptoms to the side effects of victoza ,I am wondering if the victoza would make the ibs worse ?

I took Victoza beginning June 2011. I lost 75 lbs by June of 2012 with no side effects, I thought. I was having a lot of dizziness which stopped when I quit taking it. I quit because my insurance changed and it was no longer covered. Since then I have gained nearly 30 lbs back but have felt great. Now my levels are running in the 300's and my dr. wants me back on it. worked out samples for now. BUT, this time I am not tolerating it. BAD headache (with numbness and tingling) and severe nausea and the dizziness is back. I quit again 3 days ago. It took all 3 days but finally feeling better. Now my levels are high again. I don't know which way to go now. By the way, I did take Byetta but I had violent, sudden throwing up with it.

My insurance did not approve it for me either but my Dr. was able to show why it would be beneficial for me and my insurance ok'd a 3 month supply and pending my A1C in three months will determine if they will continue to pay.  Ask your Dr. to ak your insurance company if he is able to show just cause would they pay.  Can't hurt trying

I have been on victoza for a week, and only had nausea the first day cause i started early afternoon.  I switched to taking Victoza before bed, and haven't had any issues so far.   Wish have seen a decrease in appetite, but have not weighed myself.   So taking before bed might be something to try for less nausea.

I hope your doc started you on the low dose, and that you pushed it up "as tolerated".  I went through 2 1/2 weeks of major nausea, headaches, and some dizziness, but all these faded away very gradually....but they did go away.  I started on .6 and have gotten up to 1.2.  Check with your doc to see if you can get samples, also check out www.needymeds.org to see if there is a patient assistance program that might help you.  I wish you all the best.

Just an FYI - my doc put me on Quinipril "to protect my kidneys" too. Within a month I developed a cough. It was the middle of winter so I just thought I caught a cold.  I got so bad that I couldn't sleep and I was becoming so weak that I was losing control of my bladder every time I coughed!  It's partially my fault because I never read the side effects but I went to the doctor for the cough and he didn't make the connection to the drug either. He finally took me off it 4 months later and the cough was gone within a week!
