Has Victoza helped anyone with weight loss?

Has Victoza helped anyone with weight loss?

I have Type 2 Diabetes and was put on Victoza yesterday, my doctor wants me to take this for weight loss.  I would just like to know if anyone has lost weight or has had any side effects while taking this medication.  I was on Byetta but the nausea never stopped and I felt bad all of the time.  I took my first dose this morning of Victoza and so far there has been no nausea--I just hope it lasts.  Any comments on this medication would greatly be appreciated.

Also---my doctor has put me on lisinopril even though I don't have high blood pressure, he said this is a ACE inhibitor and will protect my kidneys.  I have read BAD reviews on this medicine and I'm not sure what to do.  I told my doctor yesterday that I was leery about taking this, but he seems to think this is a good medication to take.

I cannot answer your question directly on weight loss. Victoza is a new kid on the block approved by the FDA in January 2010. It is too new to fully understand its good vs bad on humans. In animal studies, Victoza caused tumors of the thyroid gland in rats and mice. Whether it will aid in weight loss is unknown as no weight loss studies were conducted. Your best solution is a lifestyle change; proper nutrition and exercise. No pill can do what you can to do for yourself.

Lisonopril - Do you have kidney issues? I would ask your doctor why "he seems to think this is a good medication to take." For what? Get a full explanation and don't leave his office until you feel satisfied with his answer.

If you have doubts on any drug, or need more information about them go see and discuss them with your local pharmacist.

Thanks for the input on Victoza.  The first day on it I was fine but now nausea has stepped in.  I expected this to happen because the same thing happened when I was taking Byetta.  Victoza does take away your appetite and with having Diabetes it's a catch 22--you have to eat but you don't want to.

As far as the Lisonpril goes--I still have not had the prescription filled because one of the side effects is a dry cough and right now with all of the nausea I can't handle coughing all day on top of it.  Once the nausea subsides I am going to talk to a pharmacist about this medicine because I'm still not sure I really need this.

Print this out and keep handy.

Victoza may cause side effects, but many people have no, or minor, side effects. Tell your doctor if any of these most COMMON side effects persist or become bothersome:

Constipation; decreased appetite; diarrhea; dizziness; headache; nausea; pain, swelling, or redness at the injection site; sinus inflammation; sore throat; upset stomach; vomiting.

Seek medical attention right away if any of these SEVERE side effects occur when using Victoza:

Severe allergic reactions (rash; hives; itching; difficulty breathing; tightness in the chest; swelling of the mouth, face, lips, or tongue; unusual hoarseness); increased or painful urination; severe stomach pain (with or without vomiting); symptoms of thyroid cancer (eg, lump or swelling in the neck, trouble swallowing, shortness of breath, persistent hoarseness)

I'm one yr post kidney transplant after 5 yrs on hemodialysis.  My diabetes II kicked in post-transplant as I was warned it might.  Cleve Clinic post-transplant team has me on about 20 meds, some immunosuppressive, some lipid control, some blood pressure control including lisinopril.  I do have a bit of a gagging cough during the day.  The increasing insulin doses to control my blood sugar was a contributing factor in a significant weight gain month after month post surgery.  My clinic endocrinologist said I could not take Byetta because of its potential problems with kidney function, but prescribed Victoza.  Drs have had limited experience with the drug but she said on the dozen or so patients she put on Victoza, some had good experience with weight loss.  It took 3 months to get my health insurer to cover Victoza, so I've only been on it for 3 days and cannot yet speak from my own experience.  Hope this helps!

I like you have had nothing but problems with my kidneys for the past ten years.  I have been through 5 lithotripsy's and 3 laser surgery's and numerous PICC lines.  My doctor told me that my kidneys are so scarred that eventually I would wind up on dialysis.  Last year in January, I was diagnosed with Type II diabetes and was put on Byetta, I had constant nausea and could not even keep a glass of water down.  I have now been on Victoza a week now and it seems to be a much better medication than Byetta.  When I first started taking this, the nausea only lasted about 2 days and I haven't had any since and it has really cut my appetite, in fact, at times I find that I am not eating enough and I have to make myself eat a little more.
I hope Victoza works for you and you don't get the nausea.  Me and you have been through enough and the last thing we need to deal with is nausea.  Take Care.

I have been on Victoza for a little over a month and have had excellent blood sugar readings and lost 15 lbs pretty quick but then it just stopped.  My sugar is still great but no more weight loss.  I thought this was going to be my answer to weight loss prayers.  I did have a lot of nausea and loss of appetite so I guess that had  a lot to do with it.  I have contacted the company but haven't gotten a reply.  Let me know how you do.

I have been on Victoza for 2 weeks now and I am still having nausea.  I haven't weighed myself but I might have lost a little weight, not much.  Once the nausea subsides, I get very hungry but I'm really trying not to eat much.  My problem is and has always been bread.  I grew up eating bread with EVERY meal and this has been a very hard habit to break, but I'm trying.

Although I have only been on Victoza for 2 weeks, I personally did much better with the weight loss when I was on Byetta.

Good luck to you and your weight loss, I know first hand how hard it can be.

My doctor have me a prescription 2 weeks ago for Lisinopril, I still haven't filled it.  With all of the nausea I am experiencing right now with Victoza, I just don't think I can handle a cough.  I know other people as well that have taken this and they have all complained about having a dry cough and like your wife, theirs started with their first bottle.

Thanks for letting me know the experiences you and you wife had with this medication.  The more I hear about it, the more I know that I WILL NOT be getting this filled.

Take Care,

I've been using Victoza for a few months now.  I had a struggle getting going with it due to the side effects and a trip I was taking.  I completely stopped it for the trip.  I restarted it five weeks ago and "toughed it out" through the side effects.  (dizziness, headaches, etc.)  I spent a week at each level (.6/1.2/1.8).  Lost all side effects except for some residual tiredness after three weeks.  My blood sugars are normal most time.  I've lost 20 pounds so far using Victoza.

Important thing to note about weight loss with Victoza is you have to mentally adjust your intake.  You won't want or need as much food but sometimes you want to eat more "out of habit".  In fact, eating more food than you need to satisfy your hunger can actually increase the side effects of Victoza.

I tried Byetta for several months and the side effects of it were just devastating to me.  Couldn't handle it.  Victoza has been a God sens for me.  You really have to just tough it out through the side effects though.  If you persist .... it will get better.  My sugars are good all the time now, I've lost (and am continuing to lose) weight, my energy level is up, A1C's are great, couldn't ask for more.

I'm also taking Lisinopril.  It does give you a mild dry cough periodically for a short time, but nothing extreme or anything like that.  I take it in the evenings to try to limit the cough affecting me.  I'll gladly trade a little cough now and then for minimizing the effects of my DM II on my kidneys.

Best of luck to you!!

I took Victoza for 3 weeks. I lost 10lbs during that time. I had no appetite and had to force myself to eat.  I wasn't nauseated, I just didn't feel good while on the medication.  I was irritable and had no energy, probably from not eating.  Anyway, I decided to quit taking it because I was so miserable. On the second day without Victoza, I ate a regular dinner, which included a small baked lean porkchop and mashed potatoes.  Shortly afterward, I began having terrible epigastric & right upper quadrant pain that went into my back.  I was unable to lay down and sleep, sat upright on the couch, hardly able to breathe normally due to the pain.  I was so sick the next day I was unable to go to work, and was too sick to go to the dr. or the er.  Finally, after suffering with this pain, I went to the er the next day and was admitted for acute pancreatitis.  Needless to say, I don't advocate the use of Victoza.  The only plus of using the medication was the weight loss, although, I'm not sure it was worth all the pain.

Thank you so much for all of your comments and insights. I have been on Victoza since Oct 8 and have been experiencing the side effects, nausea and terrible upper gi heartburn and a lot of burping. I have lost about 8lbs and feel like I have to force myself to eat. I have been having fantastic blood sugar numbers, fasting has been under 100 the entire time! and my after dinner sugars have been in the normal range every day but one. I am up to the 1.2 level now and don't see how I will ever get to the full 1.8, then again, do I need the full 1.8? I am on 1000 mg metformin twice a day and my lantus is cut down to 10 units. I'm sticking it out, but it is hard. Any long term advice? I feel the side effects may out weigh the benefits, lower blood sugars, weight loss and hopefully a better A1C, although my last six months of A1C has been 6.8 and 6.6 (that was all achieved by insulin use, diet and exercise). I know there is no magic wand, but I need some encouragement

I began taking Victoza in March or April of 2010. I was extremely nauseated in the beginning; I started at the lowest dosage all the way to 1.8. The nausea was so bad my doctor started me from the beginning. Along with the nausea from the Victoza I had a severe case of a sinusitis, which did not help. Eventually, we got in under control; I was taking 40 units of Lantus nightly, and 1000mg metformin. I am no longer taking Lantus but, I am still on metformin. Five months on Victoza I lost 32 pounds. Today I have lost a total of 48 pounds. A1C went from 8.2 to 6.7. Victoza does decrease your appetite tremendously; I have to force myself to eat at times. But, I also realized after not eating so much (stomach shrinkage) it becomes hard to overeat….which is a good thing for me. Victoza has been a Blessing for me.

I was prescribed Victoza in September of 2010.  Since my thyroidectomy two years ago I have gained 75 lbs!  My endo says I am borderline diabetic.  So, along with metformin, I took the victoza shots 3x daily for one month (the length of the free sample he gave me) and WOW did I love it.  I never felt sick and I never felt hungry.  In fact, I was often dragging by the end of the day because I'd had no food nor desire for food.  I had to literally make myself eat.  I lost 15 lbs and then I went to fill the prescription.  It was a no-go.  This medicine cost $429/month at my local Walgreens.  I can't afford that every month.  So, since September, I've gained the weight back and am afraid to go back to the endo to tell him that I love the victoza but can't afford it.  My insurance company specifically excludes this medicine.  Not even a letter from my doctor will get it for me.  I'm hugely disappointed.

When my doctor told me about victoza and its benefits I was extremely excited about this revolutionary drug that helps lower your blood sugar level, along with weight loss at the same time.  My insurance company immediately approved it. I was so excited about trying. After a few days of using victoza  I have experienced swelling in my legs, constipation and and extreme dry mouth. Also my oral medications are slow acting since I have been on victoza. I have been advised to stop taking the drug by my doctor.

I am wondering if anyone else has experienced these problems in the beginning and if so for how long?  Victoza is great for curving the appetite, but the interaction with my blood pressure and diabetes medications are my major concerns for discontinuing victoza.

I have been on Victoza only a few days, I'm on the lowest dose until Saturday. I feel as though I've been in an up-hill battle for the last 3 to 4 years... I started out with hyperthyroidism, which made me look deathly skinny, then went on medication, gained weight lost, plus more back and then developed an allergy to it causing me to have my thyroid 'killed' with radioactive iodine making my hypothyroid which makes you gain more weight! Recently, my endo told me that my thyroid was leveled, and I thought that it was great news... only to go to my PCP in November and have him test me and tell me I'm insulin resistant. So I'm on Metformin, 2000mg/day and I just started the Victoza; I haven't had any side effects... the first day I got dizzy for a minute but I went back to sleep and woke up fine and haven't had a problem since. I don't know when you take it, but I have a weird schedule so my boyfriend leaves for work at 4:30am and I get up, take all my medicine, including the victoza, and go back to sleep until I have to get up for work. This has been working for me, I don't have any adverse reactions. I have no appetite much of the time and have to force myself to eat something to keep my energy up, but aside from that first day, I've felt great on it.

I am a Type 2 Uncontrolled Diabetic.  My Physician started me on Victoza 10 days ago I am up to 1.2 dosage and will be on 1.8 in 2 days.  I have several other health issues and if there is a side effect out there for meds you better believe I will experience it.  I am pleased to say since being on Victoza my diabetes is undercontrol the best its been my whole life and I have had NO side effects.  I also have lost 5lbs in 10days.  I feel better than I ever have and I don't have the diarrhea, headaches, food cravings or stomach problems I had on Metformin or Janumet.  I don't feel hungry and when I do I eat minimal because I feel so full so quick.  By managing my diabetes I am now managing my kidney disease and heart issues.  Try taking the Victoza for awhile and see if your side effects go away or maybe even try staying a low dose for longer.  I did have a dry mouth for the first week but its getting better each day.  I am a firm believer of this medicine and I am so blessed to have actually found something that works and doesn't make me sick.  I thank my doctor everyday for choosing this for me.

I wonder if anyone has taken the Victoza and seen weight loss without much exercise. I am a working mom and was put on Victoza to control my sugars, but was also told about the weight loss. But I ahve no time to work out with 2 kids and a hectic work schedule.

Any advice?

I have to be honest I have not excersized in the last month since I've been on Victoza and have lost 5 pounds.  I do plan to excersize, which for me means getting on the treadmill and hopefully will see even more pounds fall off.  I have to literally make my self eat 3 meals a day but haven't been doing in between meal snacking like before because I'm just not hungry.  My sugar levels are great and I expect my A1c is going to be great when I get checked again.  Good luck to you.

After reading your story I am very inspired.  Maybe I will discuss with my doctor about giving it another try.  He started me off with the maximum dosage, which may have been too much for me to take in the beginning.

Is there a better time of the day to take this medication. Some people preference for taking medication varies throuh out the day.  I am currently back to taking sylimn, which does not work as well as the victoza. Victoza is a great medication for helping a type 2 diabetic to control their appetite and to lose weight.

I want to thank you all for being so open and honest with your responses. I am willing to give it a try based on all the wonderful experiences you all have shared with me.

Lets continue to stay in touch to compare to notes on victoza and weight loss results.  I am excited about starting over again, but with a lower dose.

My doctor gave approval for me to reduce my dosage to 1.2 mg per day.  I administered the dosage around 8:00 a.m.  so far I am feeling fine with no re-occuring side effects.

However it was suggested that I take my blood pressure and diabetic medications a couple of hours before taking victoza and it was a good suggession.

Thanks everyone for your comments and concern nature.

I've taken Victoza since Wednesday Feb 2, 2010, I had a little nausea the first day and Thursday Morning a slight headache, but today (Saturday) I've had an upset stomach for about three hours, I'm on the lowest dosage (.06) I'm willing to stick it out, just hoping this nausea goes away.  I also take 1000mg of Metformin twice a day.  Not sure if I've lost any weight yet (haven't weighed myself) but I do find I don't have much of an appetite during the day!

I am a nurse and I just wanted to tell you a little bit about Lisinopril and it recommendations. People who have diabetes should take an ace inhibitor to prevent kidney problems because Diabetes has a tremendous affect on your kidneys over time and if you wait until experiencing kidney problems then it will be too late. I am also a diabetic and take victoza and once you become immune to the nausea it is not a bad medication and has helped with weight loss. Hope this helps with your decision

I've been on Victoza since November 2010.  Still suffer with nausea occasionally but found that taking ginger really helps.  I usually boil it and make a tea.  It helps me tremendously!  I have also found some crystalized ginger that I keep in my purse.  I've only lost 2lbs since being on it.  It does cut your appetite but I think my metabolism is so slow that it is EXTREMELY hard for me to lose weight.  Will not give up though...2 lbs is better nothing.

I started Victoza January 3rd 2011.  I went to check in with my Doctor Feb 16.  Thats 44 days.  My sugar levels went way down.  When I got on the scale the nurse said WOW and the Dr. just smiled...loss 20 pounds.  I haven't started any exercise program yet.  You just have to get through the side effects.  My portions sizes have cut in half, and then in half again.  It doesn't take much to fill me up.  If I over eat I get sick...so I have learned how much to eat.

Hi, i see it's been a while since you posted your question on Victoza and weight loss. The first 7 days of taking this medicine and watching my calorie and nutrient intake, i've lost 7 lbs. in 7 days. i was no happy about taking this, since i have hypo-thyroid & there were 3 months my regular thyroid medication was off the market.
i was unable to get my regular thyroid pills, i gained weight fast, sugar went up & so did my blood pressure because the synthetic thyroid medicine did not work for me. now i've been back on my old thyroid medicine for months, but my thyroid, (metabolism) is working very slow. Its taking a lot longer to get it back in range.
with this problem comes rapid weight gain, type 2 diabetic & problems with my B/P being high while my thyroid tries to readjust to using the T3/T4 (armour thyroid) medicine.
anyway. so far now it is 10 days on Victoza & no complaints, except it cost way to much money. with insurance it's over $369.00 & the needles for the pen are about $40.00 for 100. Without insurance it is about $100.00 more, either way, IT COSTS TO MUCH! so insurance ***** and so does the drug  companies prices. They know you need to take this medicine & it has to be refrigerated so they bleed you dry of money in this economy. But getting back to the subject at hand.
I don't feel like eating more. I was starting to eat certain sugary foods before I started and now, i don't eat any of that stuff. i don't feel like eating junk & my portions are small and satisfying. i measure everything & log it.    Its been a long time since i've been able to loose weight no matter how i dieted or exercised with the bad thyroid problem. The few women i talked to who took Victoza all said in general they felt better. you notice that within hours of taking it. i felt generally better somehow & was able to get out of just sitting and feeling weak.
i never took a diabetic medicine in my life. i've never had a high sugar issue & the doctor has not raised my dose because my sugar has been staying about 100 give or take a few points in the first week just before i found this site my last reading was 88. So I imagine if i loose the weight, keeping doing the 15 to 20 minutes of light exercise, like walking leisurely and maybe building it up, i will continue to loss weight and get that metabolism back in range. you can't loose weight if your hormones are off. If anyone tells you you can, they are a putz.
if you starve yourself, you can still gain weight. From personal experience, i know this & so does the hospital where i wound up for getting so sick, they scratched their heads, saying we can't understand you gaining 3 pounds in 3 days on their 900 calorie liquid diet. They don't get the metabolism problem, they are so stuck on dieting and cardiovascular exercise. if your metabolism is off, its off! no diet or exercise will work, it just makes your head feel cloudier & your body ache like heck.  so try the medicine if you didn't try it yet and don't worry about anything. Just see how it goes. if you don't like it, call your doctor right away and say you don't like it. Good luck. Good luck to all of us!

I read that you had trouble paying for your Rx's. Being a single mom and on one income, I had the same problem too. I know that almost every drug company has a Patient Assistance Program. I did some research and found Nordisk Novo's Assistance Program. It has been a life saver. If approved you get 3 months of shots for 3 and every 3 months you have to renew to make sure no information has changed. I have 3 months sitting in my fridge at home right now. I urge everyone that is having trouble paying for their RX's to see if they may qualify.

I hated Lisinopril, I was put on it for the same reason as you.  I asked to try something else and was given Diovan.  No issues since.

I just started Victoza this week, still on the lowest dose until Saturday.  No side effects for the Victoza alone.  I mixed it with some green tea pills by accident and felt like I was going to die on Tuesday, but I have been able to avoid that situation again.  My doctor says he has 2 patients that are shedding weight on Victoza and heart burn has been the only negative side efffect.  Both want to remain on the medication.  I hope to have the same success.

I have had the worse luck with weight loss I am a mother of 2 kids and work full time live on a cattle farm and have horses along with the kids activities, and have recently joined the Zumba crave I truly could not see how I could not lose weight. I have been on a 1200 calorie diet with a complete log of everything that went into my mouth because I felt like when people looked at me they were like "yeah right". I have gained so much weight and continued to gain with no end, I have been to several doctors and then finally my doc sends me to a endocrinologist for possible cushing and A1c levels which increased which I hear puts me in the diabetic category.I have the victoza meds and am supposed to start the low dose tomorrow. I have no other options the weight is really killing me, I am B/P meds, and meds for depression because when I see a pic of myself or get a weight I truly do not think that is me. I am hoping this will help this is my last shot before my only option is surgery, and I hate the thought of that option to many people I know have had it and have problems. I cannot continue on this path I do not find myself lazy, I still rack hay with the young ones, but yet I am obese! God do I hope this helps, I am scared as heck but willing to try my hand at fate!! good luck to us all

Hi

just found this site as I have been looking for others on Victoza, just started this 2 days ago - have some nauseau but it is bearable.  I know how it feels to not loose weight and I am hoping this will help me.  I have been diabetic for 20 years ( after birth of my son).  I was on Byetta for 6 weeks and all of a sudden side effects kicked in and I had to come off, was then started on Humulog insulin but only brought sugars down so far then levelled off.

I take it from the comments that this is a website in USA as I do not have to pay for any medication here in Scotland.  So glad about that.

I would urge you to try Victoza as most of the comments are good, I know side effects can be pretty bad but they do seem to subside after a time. I plan on sticking this out unless it gets really bad as my options are limited.

Dont get too down about it - let me know how it goes.

Good Luck from a Fat Diabetic Lady in Glasgow, Scotland.

I can only speak from a witness standpoint on Victoza. My mom has been on it for a week at .6 now staying at 1.2. She has had no nausea or side effects and has lost 4 pounds in week 1. As for Lisinopril I have been on it for a year. No side effects and it has been a miracle for my blood pressure. My mom also takes it and has great blood pressure results. I hope this helps. Best wishes to all.

He prefers to see how someone does here first so he has farther to go if needed, but most of his patients are doing great on 1.2. (I also take 1000mg of metformin twice a day, but was doing that before the victoza too and it wasn't doing a whole lot for my numbers. I hope to wean off the metformin if the Victoza works for me). I have had a lot of nausia, dizziness, low energy, dry mouth, and a low-fever is the most recent side-affect (or I have a bug!). Constipation the first week, but it subsided. Fiber helped, what little I could eat that is. After the first week I developed a Urinary infection. I deduced that because I had stopped eating, I had also stopped drinking!  My bad, I am susceptible to urinary infections as all type II diabetics are. So I have made sure to increase my liquid intake. My dr. thinks that is why urinary infections can be a side affect. Anyway, it is gone now, but I still am dizzy and generally feel like crap all day. My Dr. mentioned backing down again on the dosage but I really want to tough it out. I have decided to switch my shot from first thing in the morning to right before I go to bed. I know the instructions say it doesn't matter when you take it, but between me and the Dr. we discussed this and its half-life is at 12-14 hours so taking it in the morning seems to make the most sense for its effectiveness...however, I can't barely function with the nausea and dizziness, and I find myself going back to bed anyway. Late in the evening I feel better and even a little hungry. So I am going to try to turn things around by when I dose. Starting tonight. Praying it is the answer. Perhaps after a few more weeks I can switch back to mornings, but I can't miss any more work right now. Why am I staying on it?  Well, because my sugars have gone down over 150 points! I was at a constant 250-300 for the last year or so. Even when I starved myself, it never went below 200. My A1C was 11 two weeks ago (you guys with A1Cs of 6 and 7...geez, I WISH mine was that low!)  In 2007 my A1C was 14!  I got it under control for a year or so with vigorous exercise and Metformin, but in the last year I have had a hectic job (which is somewhat physical so I do get some exercise) but I have not been walking or bike riding like I was, and the numbers have crept back up again.  Well - -Yesterday I saw 113 on my meter...I have not seen a number like that for a VERY long time!  Also, since I am not hungry at all, and when I do eat I can only eat a little bit, I have lost 8 lbs in these two weeks! Not a stitch of exercise, as I am feeling too lowsy to do it. In fact, I have been laying around mostly and not even working much. Everyone says the side affects will start getting better. I hope so, I love the idea of how this med works and with the results so far. I hope the numbers stay good if I switch to a bedtime dose, and that I feel better during the day so I can do my job and carry on with my life. This forum has been helpful. Thanks.

I've been on Victoza for 20 days and i've lost 20 pds.  No side effects bad enough to make be stop taking it. I get a stomic ache if I eat to much. This has been a blessing for me, and it tops gastric bypass any day.  Good luck to everyone.

on victoza, max dose, no side effects, great amount of inches lost, the scales say the same. but clothing, way bigger, things are shifting, for the better & more muscle mass, and a reduced appetite, legs feel lighter, had nausea & generally felt crap with metformin.... BUT when i switched to--slow release metformin-- wow what a difference! no awful side effects at all, i take extra kelp and seafood/iodine to help protect my thyroid, from possible future victoza troubles, as well as other vitamins and minerals cinnamon helps as well, good luck to us all. when is that stem cell cure coming ? cheers

Yeah since posting that I've started taking the Metformin once a day (slow release tablets) and the Victoza and night and so far no nausea, but I have to increase my dosage (I'll do that next week) and since starting Victoza I've lost 19 pounds

I have had good luck with Victoza as far as lower blood sugar & have lost about 10 lbs. I had the usual problems with stomach & suffer from constipation. My insurance won't cover the Victoza so have to switch to Byetta. I hope this works for me. I found that after a month I haven't lost any more weight on the Victoza, has anyone else had the same happen to them?  Will try the Byetta & see how it works. If it doesn't I will try to contact the Victoza drug company for assistance.

Glyburide pills because I could no longer tolerate Metformin.  My numbers are so much better on the Glyburide that I can't help but wonder if I really need the Victoza.  I would like to encounter the weightloss though.  Has anyone had trouble with Victoza causing them to have hypoglycemic spells?  My doctor warned me about it, therefore, I am scared to try it!!!!  My fasting b/s this moring was 148.  Also, if I start taking it and decide I don't want to take it anymore, can I just stop taking it or do you have to stop it over time?  I love this forum, its given me alot of information, but I haven't seen the answer to my questions, so I just decided to ask.

I am a type 2 diapetic for 13 years now. I started Victoza last tuesday and have lost 6 lbs with no side effects whatsover except loss of appetite.  The only problem is my BG is staying high, around 225 to 300 even in the morning.  For some reason it just won't come down.  I was on 60 Unites of Lantus at night, 20 unites of Lantus in the morning, 8 units of novolog before breakfast, 10 units before lunch and 12 units before dinner and 5 mg of Onlyza daily.  I couldn't get good control of my bg levels with the insulin either.  My doctor took me completely off insulin while taking Victoza but am still taking the onglyza. I was really hoping this would work and am worried my doc will take me off of it when I go back next week.  I love the weight loss and I love the no side effects.  When I was on Byetta, I had dropped 30 lbs but became so sick I almost wound up in the hospital.  I don't want to go back on insulin because it caused me to gain 30 lbs.  I am sure that has something to do with my high bg levels and I am hoping with more weight loss, the bg levels will come down. I started out on the Victoza with 0.6, moved up to1.2 on Thursday, and am thinking of going to the 1.8 tomorrow.  I am hoping that will work.  Does anyone have any ideas?  I am also walking everyday but I do work 10 1/2 hour days sitting at my desk and have a 1 to 2 hour commute in the am and pm so I am pretty tired when I get home and my excercising is minimal.

I live in Albany NY and was placed on victoza 10 weeks ago.   I lost 7 lb s in the first 8 weeks and now seem to be at a standstill.  I am using just under 1.2 dosage.  Maybe I should up it?  I started at the lowest dose from day one.  My sugar cravings are still there but I cannot consume what I used to becasue I will get sick.  Maybe I need to start with exercise a few days a week.  I have not been able to lose anything in the last few years, even with a personal trainer.  I guess 7 lbs is good but I want to keep going and lose the needed 25 lbs left to go.  Any suggestions?

Hello,

33/m from Indianapolis. Type 2 diabetic for closing in on 11 years. Various drugs throughout the years.

I was 307lbs on 2/26.

New doctor put be on a steady increase of Victoza (.6 to 1.8 over the course of 3-4 weeks.)

Since 2/26:

- Went from 80 units of Lantus a day to 30 units,
- Went from 10 units of Novalog to zero units per day,
- Went from 300/12.5 of Tekturna a day to 150/12.5,
- Still taking 40mg a day of Lisinopril,
- Increased Metformin from 1000mg to 2000mg,
- Have lost 28 pounds as of 5/27.
- During that time, zero exercise, just a change in eating habits (see below),
- Added in walking last week, goal is 3-4 hours per week for now

Victoza - There were some stomach issues at first. Seemingly, no where near the problems some have endured, based on some threads I've read on sites like this. However, my "always hungry while on insulin" feeling went away almost immediately. It's hard to know if it was the Victoza directly or if it was Victoza allowing me to heavily reduce my insulin that did the trick (or even the Metformin) but the combination has been good for me.

Steady weight loss willing, my immediate hopes are to: 1) get off of lantus altogether if possible, 2) get off of Tekturna altogether, 3) maybe decrease the metformin but not as hopeful about that.

Hope that helps.

Sorry, forgot to mention two things:

1) Blood sugar (daily) still not the best, but getting better at averages: pre-breakfast: 147, pre-dinner: 119.

However...

2) In 3 months my A1C went from 7.3 to 6.1

Hello from Montgomery, Alabama. I am 39 years old and have sufferred from IBS for over ten years now. The pain had become unbearable and I was referred to a specialist in Birmingham, AL. He does alot of medication creation and experimental studies with/for Bayer.

He prescribed two new oral medications, Actigal and Zegerid. Since starting these meds two months ago, I have had NO upper stomach pain, no heartburn, and can tolerate foods I never could before.

He also added two injections, Symlin and Victoza. I was unaware that he was prescribing these for anything other than slowing down the functions of my digestive system...he did say that weight loss was a definite side effect but would also help with my symptoms....HE WAS 100 percent CORRECT!!! I feel better than I have in ten years ans I am losing weight everyday.

The Victoza does cause nausea but it subsides after a week or so. Unfortunately my Insurance will not cover the Victoza and its over $300, so maybe once every two months I can get back on it.

I say if you can tolerate the nausea for a spell, mind you I have never thrown up, DO IT! I can say nothing but good things.

I have been on Victoza for five months now. It's been nothing short of a Godsend.

I had side effects, such as constipation, sulphur burps,  a feeling of "spaciness". All of these stopped after three months of treatment.

I have lost 30 lbs., since starting on Victoza. It helped me to change my eating habits. No more red meat or refined carbs. I don't crave them. For someone who tried everything to loose weight, this has been a miracle. My blood sugar (fasting) is still to high (8 or higher..I'm Canadian), but it's not in the 15-19 range that it was before.

I have been on Victoza since February, 2011. At first, the side effects were uncomfortable, diarrhea and constipation, nausea, a 'spacey' feeling. After two weeks, these went away. I have lost about 50 lbs. People comment frequently on my weight loss, and I feel so much better. My blood sugar is also much better (I also take Metformin).
I made diet changes, too. No beef or pork, chicken only twice a week. Otherwise, I get protein from dairy and grains. And only whole grains. I drink Glucerena if I don't have time for a meal. No refined carbs ( pastry, etc). What amazed me was how easily I adapted to this diet. I know the Victoza helped a lot. Oh, lots of fruit and veggies, of course.

I have been taking Victoza for about 3 months now. I have lost almost 20 pounds in that time. I did experience a little skin irritation at the injection site, but not really any nausea. I am also taking Metformin and Amaryl. My A1C is better than it has ever been, I have energy to do things that I did not have before and I am not able to exercise. I have had problems in the past controlling my appetite but now I have no problems with that.

I am really glad I started taking this medication.

I started victoza last week.  I have been having high blood sugar readings since I started.  I've been having readings from 315-450.  I woke up this morning and was amazed that they were 101.  At noon I took a reading again....it was 390!  I only had two slices of cantaloupe, small pieces, so why would I get readings so high?  Before Victoza, I would have readings averaging 212.  I take actosplusmet twice a day.  I feel nauseated constantly and I'm sticking it out for the weight loss, but I can't make it with these high readings.  Has anyone else had these experiences?

I was put on it 3 weeks ago, and I have been losing weight. I was diagnoised with type 2 diabetes and my count has dropped drastically. Now you do have to get over the first couple of weeks of nausea, but in the end I have lost over 15 lbs. You are still suppose to maintain your no sugar.. Just because you start taking it doesn't mean you can what you want. Fruit has a lot of sugar in it, I have set a goal to eat half a banana every other other day for breakfast with my oatmeal and egg whites and 1 slice of toast. for lunch I will eat a nutra grain bar, (cause Im not hungry) and for dinner have a meal. Since I started taking it, I have not eaten more than a handful of food, per meal. I drink lots and lots of water. I started this diet about a month and a half ago and before i started taking victoza i lost over 26 pounds. I feel great. Good luck.

I have been taking Victoza since the end of March 2011.  I have lost a total of about 25 lbs.  My sugar readings are in the 90-100 range most of the time.  I never really suffered the nausea with this that I suffered with Byetta.  This has definitely been a great medication for me.  My insurance company has just refused to allow me to take 1.8 per day, and lowered me to 1.2.  Lets hope it continues the weight loss.

I became a diabete March of 2010. after getting my number level down my Dr put me on Victoza. That 45 lbs ago. Yes some minor side effects but the end results is worth that.
I'm very surprised at the with the comments I read here. But I remember my DR commenting about Victoza and PT who have been on other drugs. This he said might not be for them. If you ahve been on other drugs for more than 4-5 yrs Victoza might not be the drug for you.
Yes I watch what I eat and do walk 2-3 times a week. So all in all I seem to be doing very well.

My internist put me on Victoza and Janumet the end of November. My A1C was 8.4. By the first of January my A1C had gone down to 6.2. Since November I have lost 22 pounds. I have to make myself eat. I am disappointed that the lowest my A1C has been is 6.1 for my Type 2 diabetes. A couple of months ago my dr. switched me from Janumet to Metformin. In the past, I have been able to get an A1C number of 6.1 with Janumet alone. The weight loss has been the best thing for me. However, Victoza  is so very expensive! I am going to retire next year and don't see myself being able to afford it then. We'll see what the next year brings.

I was already on a diet last fall and had gotten down quite a bit.  I got on Victoza and went down some more.  Then I ate my way through last winter.  Fortunately, I never went back up to what I was before I got on Victoza and I don't have the severe sugar drops with Metformin, which I also take, like I did before Victoza.  It really helps to stabilize the sugar.  Of course, it doesn't stop you from putting your hand filled with cake and candy up to your mouth and swallowing what is in it.  I was wondering whether this new drug Linagliptin (Tradjenta) does the same?  It reads like you don't have to take Metformin along with it.

Been on Victoza for 2 months at first a little nausea not bad I do take blood pressure pills and Glimpride which I have cut both back to only 1 per day as both blood sugars and BP really dropped. I haven't been back to doctor still have a month to go but I'm sure he will be very happy as I am. I have a Illostomy and have had it for 25 years so was shocked this meds really works for me finally. So far I have lost 48 lbs and  and feeling great. I do feel a little depressed on the first 2 days when I start a new pen but by third day I'm back to just being me. I'm 64 years old and wish I could of started this med 10 years ago. My doctor did provide me with samples until my insurance kicked in.

I started on Victoza in late August.  In the very beginning I had no appetite and a lot of nausea throughout the day.  I am insulin resistant and have had Graves disease.  For the Graves disease I took the radioactive iodine pill to kill the thyroid cells which worked great, now I have the opposite problem, my thyroid is underactive (hypothyroid) which caused me to gain about 40 pounds.  I have lost about 8 pounds so far on Victoza and my blood sugar numbers are better than they were, still not great.  I still feel nauseated sometimes and have found that I can't eat too late at night or I will just be sick all night.  With the little bit that I am eating I am surprised that I have not lost more weight but the damn thyroid controls your metabolism and if your metabolism is slow it is very hard to loose weight.

I started on Victoza on 9/4/11.  I have since lost 10 lbs but it seems to have stopped.  I hardly eat anything, I don't even want any snacks between meals and my portions are 1/2 of what they were.  I had been going to the gym 5 days a week but lately I haven't hardly gone at all.  I will get back into it and hopefully the weight loss will start again.

My insurance covered it - which surprised me since they hardly cover anything I need. I got a 3 month supply for $100.  However, this insurance will end in Dec. so I don't know if I will be able to continue on this after the end of the year.

I have been on Victoza since the end of July 2011 and have lost 32 pounds by simply eating less.  The only side effect has been constipation which I have fixed by eating a few prunes each day and drinking more water.  I would recommend Victoza, especially as a way to kick start weight loss.

Hello,

Your comments on the Website sound much like mine with regard to Byetta, I couldn’t tolerate it at all.

I have been on Victoza since last August with no complications.  I also take metformin and Lisinopril for BP.  The best news is that I have lost 47 pounds and hope to reach my goal of 60 lbs. by Christmas.  As for my diet, I have reduced my carb intake and fats. I also have reduced portion size, primarily because the Victoza takes away my appetite.  I have been lacking in exercise though, something I need to do better.

So, I wish you luck and hope you have the same success I have had.

Hi, i'm Jackie, I was put on Victoza 3 weeks ago and went through hell with side effects for two weeks (did ok on 0.6) after going on 1.2.  It is settling now from most of what other threads stated but i also had massive amounts of acid and was drinking a litre and a half of Soda water to neutralise these effects, including waking me up being sick with it.  I too have lost 10 lbs and feel thinner and as if fat and muscle are movin. Clothes are looser than for just 10lbs loss.  I always knew my problems stemmed from being able to not eat all day but any time i did eat i was ravenous and couldn't stop. I didn't know what it felt like to be full, that sensation others have, but now i do and its great.  i have cut down at least half of what i was eating and really do't want more.  I found it was easier (symptoms wise) if i ate a gall bladder diet,  v little fat and fibre foods like porridge.  Try it good luck

I dont know if an increase libido is a side effect of Victoza or if it is just the increase of self esteem due to the weight loss but my husband has benefited also from this medicine also. D.Y.

I just stumbled across this site and thread while looking for side affects for Victosa. I just picked up my supply and will be starting it in the morning. Very glad to have read what I did so that I know what I am up against in the comping days, weeks and months.
I am a Type II diabetic diagnosed in April 2011 and because of medications I have been taking for my COPD (prednisone) my sugars are totally out of control, going as high as the mid 200s pre breakfast. I have also gained back all of the 135 lbs I had previously  lost due to having an underactive thyroid to boot.
Will post in the coming days and weeks as I get going with this therapy. My GP is starting me at .6 but has not mentioned uping it. I also take 500mgs of Metaform twice a day.
Has anyone found a type of day that it is better to take the Victoza to relieve some of the nausea? I have been taking the metaform morning and night and was going to take this mid day... Just thinking outloud here, but if anyone has feed back would love to hear it :)

I took victoza for almost 2 years and I lost 80 lbs. while taking it. I felt really good taking victoza. But my body got use to it and then my sugar started acting up. Now I have gained some of the weight back. My sugar is still not under control. I'm having to take regular insulin. victoza isn't insulin. It's medicine that helps the panceras work to make it's own insulin. I didn't have any side effects like you would on most medicines.

I started Victoza in Nov/11. I took the 0.6 mg x 2 weeks, then 1.2 mg x 2 months. Just increased to 1.8 mg 10 days ago. I was on Humalog three times a day and Lantus insulin at bedtime. Now I am off all Humalog and my Lantus dose is down to 34 units from 58 units.  Mild nausea in the beginning but have had ongoing problems with constipation alternating with diarrhea. Since increasing to 1.8 mg having just contipation. Hoping to find a way to resolve this. I have lost 28 lbs and am following Weight Watchers program and exercising everyday. Still hoping to lose another 45 lbs. Overall I think this medication is working for me. Just so happy to get off the Insulin as it made me hungry and gain weight. Blood sugars are great now between 5-7. This drug has given me hope that I can get control of a disease that can cause so many problems if not controlled and the weight loss is awesome!

I am not diabetic, but I have PCOS/insulin resistance, so my doctor prescribed Victoza to help with weight loss. I had tried Metformin in the past, but it made me feel sick most of the time, so I stopped taking it. Since September 1, 2011, I have lost 43 pounds on Victoza. I don't exercise very often, but I have cut out a lot of refined sugar and grains. That has made a big difference. I highly recommend Victoza for weight loss!

Having taken Victoza for 6 months now, barring the development of serious side effects - none so far - I think Victoza may be a miracle-in-the-making.  For those of us who have suffered from excess weight for a lifetime, this drug enables on-going significant weight loss WITHOUT the nagging constant hunger and cravings that plagued and destroyed prior attempts.

The health risks of obesity, partcularly later in life, as is the case with me,
far exceeded the risks of Victoza and the health benefits I will gain from losing the blubber that would like cause my premature death.

I just started Victoza on Feb 14 (yesterday).  I am not a diabetic but I am overweight.  I need to lose about 50 pounds.  I saw a news report about Victoza on a local channel here and the doctor was prescribing it to non diabetics for weight loss.  I was diagnosed with metabolic syndrome.  Dr tested me for glucose (102) and measured circumference of neck, abdomen and waist.  Dr also tested cholesterol...etc....  He gave me the prescription and my insurance covered it.  No side effects the first day until after my last meal last night.  I felt very full, like I had a rock in my stomach (like when you overeat at the buffet).  Same thing again this morning after my oatmeal....it's just a little uncomfortable but 4 hours later, still full after eating 1/2 cup oatmeal (raw & just mixed with water)  I just forced myself to eat a very small salad.  I am wondering if anyone has any feedback and on Victoza solely to lose weight also?  I am supposed to increase dose to 1.2 in a week.

A couple of years ago I took myself off all meds and felt the best I had in years. Even felt like walking and other exerszes. I also lost weight but the A!C was 9-10.

I have PCOS and metabolic syndrome/insulin resistance.  Until recently, I was treating with a fertility doctor to try to become pregnant for the first time.  Then he basically told me to come back after I lost 70 pounds.  Having had success before with the Atkins diet, I started back on that a few weeks ago.  Got a treadmill and started walking.  Went from 276 to 268.5 quickly, but then got stuck.  My regular doc prescribed Victoza, which I started three days ago.  Let me tell you, I can hardly wait to get out of bed in the morning and give myself a shot!  264 this morning - lost 4.5 pounds in 3 days.  Granted, I AM doing Atkins, which means under 20 grams per day of carbs/sugar. But Victoza is like a miracle drug when it comes to curbing hunger.  Now, I have to focus to make sure I get enough vegetables and protein every day, because I just don't have an appetite.  It's seriously amazing.  I've had some extremely mild nausea, mostly just after eating.  Still on .6.  Also taking Metformin and Synthroid.  I feel like Victoza has leveled the playing field so to speak.  I'm really grateful to my doctor for her understanding of metabolic syndrome.  I'm sick of those people who think it's just an issue of exercising and eating less.  They're so misinformed!

I've been on Victoza for over a year.  Amazing weight loss in the first few months.  I went from 320 down to 255. Still very heavy, but I was making progress for the first time.  Now I seem to have bottomed out and have started gaining weight again.  Up to 267 from 255.
Talked to my insurance 24/7 nurse line.  She looked Victoza up and one article indicated that Victoza initally slows the process of food through the stomach thus giving the full feeling/not wanting to eat more.
Seems that this benefit has waned.  I'm back in the hungry mode. I have my Doctor's appt in a couple weeks, just thought I'd see what others are experiencing.  Thanks

My doctor is great he put me on victoza today. he said I should start in a week on 1.2 mg but NEVER go up to 1.8. He said this drug is great and has been studied for 4 years and even though there are great results, many people stop taking it because they go to 1.8 they usually always get nauseated. He said if you stay at 1.2 you will be fine. Something to ask your doctor!!

I have lost about 15lbs since starting VictosaI 1month ago. No wonder getting up in the morning, the smell of food, beef, and if I get upset all make me sick. My blood sugars are great but then again I can't eat anything. I see the doctor next week not sure if this is worth it.

I was prescribed Victoza for weight loss about 2 weeks ago.  I've lost 6 lbs so far.  I'm at 1.2 and was told not to go over that dosage.  The only side effect I've noticed so far is a persistent cramping in the top part of my stomach.  I can deal with that as long as it's not a sign of something more serious!  The posts have helped...thanks everyone.

I totally agree with you! I to have PCOS, diabeties  and some other things that come with it. I just started Victoza a week and a half ago and have lost 20 lbs. I have been addicted to sugar all my life. For the first time in my life I do not crave sugar or sweets. I thought I would try a candy bar tonight I took two bites and put the rest of it in a ziplock. That also has never happened. It was so much sweeter than usual. Sickening sweet. LOL I go back to the DR Monday and we will see what he says. So far I am so excited about this medicine. My husband made a pitcher of Kool-Aid and I thought he put two much sugar in it because it was so sweet. I would like to know what causes you cravings to change and how sweet things become sickening sweet. LOL

This will be my third time trying victoza.  The previous attempts ended because I had a strange reaction with my blood pressure raised extremely high from taking the drug.  This time the doctor has started me out at 06 dosage. So far so good and my blood pressure is in good range.  My appetite has decreased.  I am very excited and hopes it last.

The encouragement I have received from all of you is what made me want try it again, but this time a lower dosage.

Good luck and  just as an encouragement I had the same problems, but started just a week ago back to taking victoza, but at a lowest dosage. I am doing well and have dropped a couple of pounds already.  The best to you!

That's what my doctor told me too. I just started taking it. My doctor said since I am a diabetic and trying to lose weight with my medical insurance Victoza is the one to try and/or have.

I have been on this medication for approximately 2 months.  I have lost a total of 25 lbs, but now I am at a stand still.  The scales won't budge.  At first it was easy.  I was nauseated and felt bad every day, not wanting anything at all to eat.  But now the nausea has stopped and I must make myself not eat the wrong foods.  I have cut out sodas and sweets and fried foods.  Because of health problems, I can not exercise as much as I would like to.  Good luck with yours.

Hi,

I just started taking Victoza about a week ago now and I'm not having any side effects at all...except for not having an appetite. I do have to force myself to eat something also so that I don't go into low sugar or start feeling bad. My doctor told me to start on a high protein diet and suggested I buy Premier Nutrition High Protein Shakes. I bought the chocolate ones and have been drinking on in the morning after I take my shot and one for lunch. Then I'll eat a regular meal for dinner. I do try to snack in between also. I also am on Lisinopril and haven't had any issues with that either. I couldn't take Metformin. After 3 weeks of being on that I was so sick and miserable that my doctor switched me to Glipizide. My last A1C was 8.2...which was a huge spike from my 6.8 before that. I'm hoping that with some weight loss and appetite suppression, I'll be able to get that number even lower.
For those without insurance, or if your insurance doesn't cover Victoza, see if your doctor will give you samples. Mine did for the first month but my insurance will cover it after that with a $35 co-pay. Hoping that I will have as much weight loss success as some of you! My dad took Byetta for a long time and he did lose weight, but he was very nauseaus too. I have had no problems and I plan to stick this out and see how it goes.
Best of luck to you all!

I started taking Victoza in Sept2011 for Type @ diabetes. I did have nausea initially but decided the pros weighed far better than the cons. It has changed my appetite but actually for the better, I desire foods like fruit and salads now more than fried foods so it has helped me greatly... I have lost about 20 lbs since Sept which has also helped with lowering my blood sugars. Victoza has been a wonderful thing for me......  Take it !!!!
