MRI vs CT scan

My Dr. wants me to get a CT abdominal scan. The closest imaging service available, that is covered by my insurance at 100%, at no out of pocket is 4 hours away.  I can get an MRI done 2 hours away also at no cost to me. I asked my Dr. if an MRI would work for what they were needing. He said No.  I guess my question is, why wouldn't an MRI as well as a CT scan? It's really just about the money I have to spend for health services. I want to keep my cost as low as possible. Getting an MRI would save me hours on the road, and several hundred dollars copay.

Hi there!

Well, the CT and the MRI are not completely interchangeable investigations. While the MRI may have a better resolution, the CT may be more sensitive in a few conditions. The choice of the investigation is best decided by the treating doctor/ radiologist, depending on what they are trying to look at or find.
Hope this is helpful.

Take care!
