Metabolic Syndrome Confirmed

Metabolic Syndrome Confirmed

I've been overweight with high BP, triglycerides and frequent gout attacks. So I wasn't shocked when my cardiologist and my new general practitioner confirmed that I've "tipped into" Metabolic Syndrome. My first question, and I'll have more is, my fasting glucose a month ago was 110 (tests for my cardiologist). Last few years it's been high and steady in the 90s. Then a separate blood panel was done for my GP. The numbers came back at a whopping 160. The day before I had an uncharacteristic pasta and spumoni binge. Even after fasting all that sugar was still way higher than I expected. My cardiologist thinks that if I lose as little as 10 pounds through exercise (a step in the right direction)  the numbers will start to improve. My GP is skeptical and wants me on Glucophage right away. I'm confused if I should go through lifestyle style changes only or start on the meds. Thanks for reading this. I'm kind of scared by all of this--my wake up call.

You really sound to me like if you walked 30 minutes a day and watched your carbohydrates, and food portions, you would be fine.  Fasting glucose at 90 is good ,,and if the 160 was after a meal that would be within normal range, especially after eating so much pasta(carbohydrates)..........I would hold off on the meds and try diet aand exercise if it was me........but I am not your doctor.  Good luck. Dring lots of water too.
