Uncontrolled and unmanaged diabetes can cause glaucoma, fluid build-up. The pressure damages nerves and the vessels in the eye, causing changes in vision and creating headaches. This can lead to retinopathy [damage to the retina], which can eventually lead to blindness.

Type 2 diabetics who have had diabetes for 10 or more years are advised to get yearly retina scans by an Opthamologist. Depending on your current vision some doctors advise yearly scans for everyone.
