Severe Burning of Hands with burn spots. Also ears too

I've had this before but every time I get it I deal with it using Camphor menthol prescribed lotion which really helps, plus gabapentin. My hands have been burning feelings with a dime size burn spot on my right thumb. I also used to get hives when this happened. I have been treated for urticaria and that doesn't bother me as much as the skin burning and deep tissue burning pain.
What causes this. Is it years of ingesting sugar without knowing I was type II diabetic and now I have damaged nerves. My ears get a similar sensation and the skin actually burning and with barely scratching it I get burn like sores on my ears. Am I nuts or is the a bad symptom of Diabetic neuropathy. What can help me through these days that it lasts. Mind you I've been given an assortment of pills to help but the Camphor Menthol lotion really helps the most.
