Side effects from OGTT???

Side effects from OGTT???

Hello everyone.  I'm new to the boards here and well I thought I would pose a question to see if i'm getting the "normal" post testing reaction from the OGTT 2 hr testing.  But first a little background.

I went to a new primary care physician who completed a routine blood test with a new patient appointment.  I had records that showed my blood sugars, cholesterol and A1C were all within normal ranges for the past 6 months.  She ordered the testing anyways to get a check up.

In the past two months to a year I have had recurrent problems with lightheadness, dizziness, and some vision changes.  I'm 5ft tall 205lbs as of today.  Since Jan 2009 I've dropped from 218 to 205 today.  Most of the weight loss being in the last two weeks.  My vision changes mainly are in my left eye, where things are not so clear as the right eye, but a little blurry and its pretty much constant now.  I'm having recurrent problems with UTI's with mainly luekocytes being found in my urine samples and having to go on Cipro for it mutiple times this year already.  I've had episodes where what I thought was low blood sugar because I haven't eaten in a few hours (I know my bad.. just forget to eat sometimes), where I would go almost complete blurry, feel sick and nauseated, and have trouble controlling my hands and feet.  This scenario has happened about 3-4 times now.   The scary part is two of the episodes happened while I was driving home from work.  Each time I was able to pull off to the side of the road until my vision and bodily functions returned.  I know my family has a heavy history of diabetes on both maternal and fraternal sides of the family, and my immediate family, mom and grandmother both have problems maintaining blood pressure levels to a normal, with my grandmother being on medications for low blood pressure.

I had the fasting 12 hour blood test done and I cam back slightly high on the fasting glucose at 100, which our threshold in Nevada at least is 99.  I was also low on HDL at 42, minimum is 46.  Oddly enough, my blood pressure had dropped from a normal range around 120/76 to 100/60 the day I went to see the new dr.

Yesterday (Saturday 5/9/09) I had the 2 hour OGTT testing.  The technician who drew my blood samples was a horrible vein locator..  I've got three bruises...  One very large one about the size of a quarter that is almost black and purple now (Sunday 5/10/09).  Within a few minutes of drinking the Orange Drink (75mg of glucose I think) @ 10 am, I felt sick to my tummy, and held down vomiting because she said if I did that we have to repeat this study (not something I look forward to is needles) and developed a dull headache.  This continued for the whole testing.  I didn't feel "normal" until about an hour after the last draw at about 1-2pm (last draw at 12noon).   Coincidently... headache, upset stomach and diarrhea is the same type of reaction I have to eating candy, ice cream, milk, large amounts of cheese, cotton candy martini's, etc and just chopped it up to being lactose intolerant.

The question after all this typing/history is today I'm feeling slugglish, sleepy, tired, a bit crampy in the tummy and I have HORRIBLE case of diarrhea.  Is this a normal post testing reaction.  They never mentioned anything in the literature about the side effects after the testing.  Most of what I read was about the nausea, headach, etc at about the 1 hour mark, which I got almost immediately.   Should I still be having issues with fatigue, and nausea 24 hours plus later?

I get the test results on Wednesday.

Unfortunately, many of us have had our share of poor blood draw technicians missing veins, digging around with the needle looking for gold, and leaving us with bruises. Next time, ask for a different technician.

"I felt sick to my tummy, and held down vomiting because she said if I did that we have to repeat this study (not something I look forward to is needles) and developed a dull headache. " I would have vomited on the technician, aiming squarely at her chest so she gets the full hurl. Then maybe the doctor would have been informed and taken immediate action to treat your intolerance to the glucose drink. Tell you doctor about your test and post test nausea. Its important to your well being that he/she is aware of your discomfort.

"I get the test results on Wednesday."
What results?

I actually got the OGTT test results a little earlier than I thought.  The 2 hr mark of the OGTT was 147, range max is 140.

I doubt I will be going back to that quest diagnostics facility... my normal location wasn't open on saturday so I went to an alternate.. learned my lesson!!!

Thanks for the response..
