Vegetative State

My father had an episode last Tuesday where he was without oxygen for a very long time (he was missing for 3 hours).  He is on kidney dilysis and has an insulin pump.  When he was brought into the ER, his suger was 17.  He was diagnosed today as being in an acute vegetative state.  What does that really mean?  What are his chances of survial?  What exactly does the "acute" mean?

I'm sorry about your father, klatham. I think your questions about your father's prognosis are best directed to his medical professionals.

As Zoelula stated, this is a delicate situation and one best addressed by the physician.

Do not hesitate to ask them questions and get a second opinion.

You have my sympathies.
