Very fit 43 yr old male w glucose issues

by juanlobo, Sep 19, 2009 06:24PM
I am a very active, very fit 43 yr old male. I also have a sweet tooth. Over the past several weeks i have been experiencing what I believe to be daily, if not constant,  hypoglycemia. It has gotten to the point where it is pretty constant. I've stopped eating cookies and or candy, my main device, and the shakiness persists. I occasionally get light headed, nausea, and irritable from what I believe to be Hypoglycemia but d I am concerned that it is the onset of something more destructive.

I usually have some fruit and yogurt and a lot of protein for breakfast, snack once til lunch (healthy), scarf down a handful of cookies in the afternoon and eat a healthy dinner accompanied by wine when I get home.Lately the wine has been causing nausea and making me lightheaded.

I am on statins for familial cholesterol issues but am otherwise quite healthy.  I have an appointment with my PCP soon but would be grateful if someone could diagnose this sooner.

Thanks.

Sorry, nobody on an online forum can "diagnose" you. You are doing the right thing by seeing your PCP. Do you mainly get the hypoglycemic feelings when it is time for your meal? You might try having a small snack (not sugar) when you feel this way and see if it helps. Some people do experience hypoglycemia without having diabetes. Let us know how it goes.

Thanks- I know. I thought someone might say " oh that's simple- do xyz". My father is a doc, told me I am a hypochondriac not a hypoglycemic and he's probably correct as are you. I know there is an easy fix to this but I am just befuudled. My bs has been so low for many days straight now, so I went out and bought a monitor. My bs was 88 before dinner 85 after dinner and 78 at midnight. Ate a yogurt, felt great and here at 6 am I can feel it all over again.

Yesterday AM I felt awful so I went to the gym and lifted heavy weights for an hour and got on my road bike for a very intense 3 hr ride- afterwards I felt fine. Sat down to watch a litle football and bang- felt like hell again. Makes no sense to me. Thanks again.

Jeez, I was just reading the manual for the bs monitor and those numbers I gave are in the normal range- I guess I am just a hypochondriac....

You said your blood sugar before dinner was 88 and 85 after dinner. Although you did not say how soon after you ate dinner (or what you consumed) your bs should be considerably higher than 85.

I suggest you stop diagnosing yourself, if possible, and let your PCP determine what your actual medical status is. You may have to accept the fact that you are very healthy, which is a lot more than most participants in the forum can hope for.

Good Luck,
troytroy
