my son is going to have vitrectomy surgery and  silicone oil will be put in.  He will only have to hold his head down for 24 hours.  What happens to the oil. Thank you

Hi there!

Silicone oil is injected into the eye during viterectomy to hold the retina in place and/ or aid in reattachment; it may need to be removed later. This can also be achieved by other procedures such as gases etc.
Hope this information is helpful.

Take care!
