need help

hi everyone, my husband was recently diagnosed with Diabetes, he is 35 years old and has a long family history of it, his hemoglobin aic was 13.7 the doctor put him on metformin 500 2 x per day and just recently increased to 1000mg in the AM and 500 at night, I am a nurse and the doc said if blood sugars are still greater then 200 after 2 weeks to increase to 1000mg 2 x per day which we have done, his sugar is still runnign high, 270-310, he has cut out all soda, with the exception of an occasional glass, he drinks mostly water, lots of chicken etc.. my question is what is the next step would glucophage xr be better for hiim to take, he really hopes it doesnt get to daily insulin, I do not have a ton of expertise in diabetes so I am hoping someone can help me here..
thank you
Luci

Hi,

diet is important.  Not just no soda, but reduce the amount of carbs he eats and make sure that those he does eat are complex / high fibre which will give a more steady blood sugar.  Fruit will need to be limited.

Is your hubby overweight?  Part of managing diabetes is getting as close as possible to ideal body weight.

Exercise will also go a good way to helping him manage his diabetes.  Can he exercise.  If possible 30 minutes session of aerobic type exercise (walking, stationary bike, etc) twice a day, would be ideal.

Plenty of information online.  Can he be referred to a diabetes education centre to learn about diet and exercise to manage it?

best wishes

Sally

Sally is correct about diet, weight and exercise. These are the number one priorities in controlling diabetes, the guidelines to adhere too. Metformin is used to help assist with controlling glucose levels as long as one is following the guidelines of diabetes control. Glucophage is the proper name for Metformin. The RX stands for extended release. In other words, its like time release where the medicine remains longer in the body. Lifestyle change is needed, not change of medicine. Good luck.
